Fenerbahçe have completed the signing of Mason Greenwood from Marseille in a deal confirmed on 14 July worth a fixed €40m, with a further €2m available in add-ons. The 24-year-old forward has signed a four-year contract in Istanbul, ending a two-season spell in France in which he re-established himself as one of Ligue 1's most reliable finishers. Manchester United, who sold Greenwood to Marseille in 2025, have retained a sell-on interest and will bank a further sum from this move on top of that original fee.
Fenerbahçe moved for Greenwood as the marquee signing of their summer rebuild. The club have not won the Turkish league since 2014, while city rivals Galatasaray have claimed the last four titles, and the hierarchy identified a proven goalscoring wide forward as the missing piece to close that gap. The move comes after a turbulent few months at the club: José Mourinho was sacked following a Champions League play-off exit to Benfica, with Domenico Tedesco brought in as his successor. Greenwood was not Fenerbahçe's only suitor — Atlético Madrid had also been in talks and reportedly offered more money, but Diego Simeone's club walked away after growing frustrated waiting for a response from the player's camp, clearing the way for Fenerbahçe to get the deal done.
For Marseille, this is a sale driven as much by circumstance as by choice. The club failed to qualify for the Champions League this season, a result that has put a significant dent in their finances, and were always likely to need to sell one of their prized assets this summer. Marseille's sporting director, Grégory Lorenzi, said Greenwood himself had made clear he wanted to leave the club as quickly as possible once interest materialised. Losing their top forward is a blow to a squad that leaned heavily on his goals, but the fee — bolstered further by a sell-on cut owed to Manchester United — gives Marseille funds to reshape the squad without European football to help pay for it.
Greenwood leaves France in outstanding form. He was among Ligue 1's leading scorers again this season, finishing level for the division's top-scorer award with 21 league goals and taking his overall tally for the campaign to 26 in all competitions. It continues a pattern from his time at Marseille, where he was consistently the club's most productive attacker, mixing goals with a healthy return of assists and firmly establishing himself as one of the most dangerous forwards outside Europe's top five leagues.
At Fenerbahçe, Greenwood is expected to operate from the right or through the middle of the attack, the role he made his own in France — cutting inside off the flank, driving at defenders and finishing chances with either foot. Tedesco's side will hope his direct running and goal threat translate quickly to the Süper Lig, giving them a genuine focal point as they try to keep pace with, and eventually overtake, Galatasaray both domestically and in Europe next season.
