Fenerbahçe have completed the signing of Ghana centre-back Kojo Peprah Oppong from Nice in a reported €12m deal, with the 22-year-old signing a four-year contract barely a year after joining the French club.

The timing tells its own story. Fenerbahçe had just booked their place in this season's Champions League league phase, beating Lyon in a play-off tie that finished 2-1 on aggregate and was marred by ugly scenes involving fans and players after the final whistle. That result adds a heavy fixture list on top of the usual Süper Lig title race, and it's exactly the kind of squad Fenerbahçe now need to strengthen at the back. For Nice, it's a departure driven as much by necessity as by football logic. That season was a productive one. Oppong made 29 Ligue 1 appearances for Nice in 2025-26, starting all but one of them, and scored his first senior goal along the way. He was one of the more consistent performers in a difficult campaign for the club, posting the best duel win rate of any Nice player with significant minutes — above 60% — and winning more than half his aerial contests, numbers that point to a defender who competes well individually even when the team is struggling.

At Fenerbahçe, that profile should translate reasonably well. He's young enough to develop further but already has a season of regular first-team football in a major European league behind him, plus senior experience with Ghana. Expect him to compete for a starting centre-back spot rather than walk straight into one, with the club's existing options meaning he may need to earn minutes gradually — but a four-year contract suggests Fenerbahçe see him as a long-term piece of their defence rather than a squad filler for one campaign.
