Fenerbahçe have completed a permanent transfer for Angers striker Sidiki Cherif, with the Turkish club paying an €18m fee to trigger the mandatory purchase clause written into the move earlier this year. The 19-year-old first arrived in Istanbul in February on an initial loan worth €4m, with Fenerbahçe obliged to make the deal permanent once certain conditions were met. Including that loan fee and add-ons of around €3m, the total package is reported to be worth close to €25m, matching the club-record fee Angers received for Jeff Reine-Adélaïde back in 2019. Cherif has signed a contract at Fenerbahçe running to 2030.
Fenerbahçe moved for Cherif to freshen up their attack after Youssef En-Nesyri left for Al Ittihad in Saudi Arabia, and with the club chasing Galatasaray at the top of the Süper Lig they wanted a forward with pace, physicality and the versatility to play through the middle or off the left. Cherif fit the profile: he's 1.88m tall, comfortable in behind defences or dropping to link play, and still just 19, giving Fenerbahçe scope to build around him for years. Crystal Palace had also shown interest and made an approach earlier in the year, but the Premier League club couldn't agree terms with Angers, clearing the way for Fenerbahçe to get their man.
For Angers, this is a significant loss. Cherif came through the club's academy after arriving in France as a young child, made his Ligue 2 debut at 16 and had established himself as a first-team regular by the time he turned 19. In the first half of this season he was Angers' top scorer with four goals in 19 appearances, including strikes against Monaco, Marseille and Nantes — notable given Angers are usually fighting nearer the bottom of Ligue 1 than the top. Losing a home-grown forward who was still improving, and doing so for a fee that ranks among the biggest in the club's history, leaves a gap in attack that Angers will need to fill from within a tighter budget than their suitors.
Cherif's underlying form backs up the price tag. Despite injuries slowing his early development, he broke into the Angers side as a teenager and kept producing against stronger opposition, which is what caught Fenerbahçe's eye in the first place. Since making the move to Turkey he has kept scoring: he made his Fenerbahçe debut in a 3-1 win over Gençlerbirliği, then got off the mark in Süper Lig with a goal away at Antalyaspor before following it up with another in the Turkish Cup against Gaziantep. That early return — three goals in his first 14 appearances for the club — suggests the transition to a new league and a bigger club hasn't overwhelmed him.
In terms of fit, Cherif looks like a long-term successor to En-Nesyri rather than a like-for-like replacement. He's not the finished target man that the Moroccan was, but his mobility and eye for goal from wide or central positions give Fenerbahçe's coaching staff more attacking options, and at 19 he has time to grow into a lead striker role. His form has also been strong enough to earn interest from the France youth setup, with an under-21 call-up following his move to Istanbul — another sign that his development is trending in the right direction rather than stalling after a big-money switch.
