Liverpool have confirmed the signing of Víctor Muñoz from Osasuna, with the Spain winger putting pen to paper on a six-year contract at Anfield. The fee matches his €40 million release clause, reported in the region of £34.5 million once add-ons are included, and Osasuna say they will share the proceeds with Real Madrid, who retained a 50 per cent sell-on stake in the player from the deal that took him to Pamplona a year earlier.
The move is Andoni Iraola's first signing since taking over as Liverpool head coach, and it did not come easily. Newcastle United had believed a deal was all but done, with personal terms agreed and a medical arranged in the United States, only for Liverpool to step in during the final 24 hours and convince Muñoz to change course. The 22-year-old later said Iraola's personal involvement, and his explanation of how he wanted his wide players to operate, played a big part in the decision.
For Liverpool, the appeal is straightforward: pace, directness and versatility on the flank. Muñoz predominantly plays on the left but is comfortable on the right or through the middle, and Iraola, who knows him well from La Liga, wants a winger who can attack space quickly and press aggressively. With Mohamed Salah having left the club, Liverpool needed fresh legs and a different kind of threat out wide, and Muñoz's directness fits that brief without necessarily blocking the pathway for younger forward Rio Ngumoha.
Osasuna, by contrast, lose a player who made an immediate impact after arriving from Real Madrid's academy. Muñoz made 34 appearances in his single season at the club, scoring seven goals and adding five assists, form that earned him two La Liga Under-23 Player of the Month awards and a first call-up to Spain's senior side, for whom he scored on his debut against Serbia. Osasuna's official statement thanked him for his contribution and professionalism, noting he had earned the respect of supporters in a short but productive stint that helped the club stay in the top flight.
That form is exactly why Liverpool moved so decisively. A teenager-turned-regular who can beat a full-back, carry the ball at speed and chip in with goals and assists is rare at the price, and his output at Osasuna suggests he is ready to step up rather than needing a long bedding-in period. He remains with Spain for their World Cup campaign, so he will not link up with his new Liverpool team-mates until later in the summer.
Once he does report for pre-season, expect Iraola to use him as a wide outlet who can stretch defences and combine with attacking full-backs, the same kind of high-tempo, front-foot wing play he asked for at his previous clubs. How quickly Muñoz adapts to the pace and physicality of the Premier League will be the key question, but the early signs, and the trust Iraola has shown in prioritising him as his first signing, point to a player Liverpool expect to be a regular starter rather than a squad option.
