Atlanta United have signed Switzerland striker Breel Embolo from Rennes in a reported $18m deal, making him a Designated Player through the 2029-30 season.

Atlanta United have signed Breel Embolo from French side Rennes, with the club confirming the forward's arrival on 23 August 2026 on a contract running through the 2029-30 MLS season. The 29-year-old Switzerland international joins as a Designated Player in a deal reported at around 18 million US dollars, ranking among the biggest transfer fees in MLS history. Reports of the move first emerged in mid-August, with Embolo said to have travelled to the United States to complete the switch before Atlanta announced it themselves at the weekend. He is set to occupy a Designated Player and international roster spot once his International Transfer Certificate and visa paperwork are processed.

Atlanta went into the move needing goals. The club had scored the fewest of any Eastern Conference side this season, and chief soccer officer Chris Henderson pointed to Embolo's pedigree in explaining the signing, saying the striker was "coming off a strong performance at the World Cup with Switzerland" and had "a proven track record of goal contributions in multiple top European leagues." The deal is the first marquee signing since Mauricio Culebro was appointed president of soccer in March, having previously led Mexican club Tigres UANL, and it follows Atlanta sending forward Emmanuel Latte Lath out on loan to Union Berlin earlier in the window.

For Rennes, it means losing a player who had just become central to their attack. Embolo joined from Monaco in 2025 for around 15 million euros and went on to score 10 goals with three assists in 34 appearances in his only season in Ligue 1, forming a productive strike partnership with fellow forward Esteban Lepaul as Rennes' attack improved through the campaign. His exit, for a fee reported in France at around 15 to 17 million euros, leaves the club needing to rebuild that partnership after only a year together, and comes at a club that has already been through managerial upheaval this year.

Embolo arrives at Atlanta on the back of a strong summer with Switzerland, who reached the quarter-finals of the 2026 World Cup. He contributed two goals and two assists during that run. Across his career at Basel, Schalke, Borussia Monchengladbach, Monaco and Rennes, he has scored 100 goals and set up 66 more in 380 professional appearances, and he has 26 goals in 92 caps for his country, underlining the level of experience Atlanta are adding to their forward line.

At Atlanta, Embolo is expected to play as a central striker who holds the ball up and makes runs in behind, rather than purely as a penalty-box finisher, which the club believes will suit combination play with attacking midfielders Miguel Almiron and Alexey Miranchuk. It is a similar profile to the one Atlanta hoped for when they paid a club-record fee for Latte Lath, whose spell in Atlanta did not go to plan before his loan move away this summer. That history means Embolo arrives with the job of leading the line as the club looks to turn its season around, and with a long-term contract that suggests Atlanta see him as a fixture rather than a short-term fix.
