Villarreal have completed a reported €15 million move for Canada international Nathan Saliba, who joins from Anderlecht on a five-year contract after a breakout World Cup.

Villarreal have signed Nathan Saliba from Anderlecht, with the Belgian club confirming the Canada international's departure on 25 August 2026 after the two clubs agreed a fee reported at around 15 million euros, including a sell-on percentage for Anderlecht. The 22-year-old has signed a five-year contract at Villarreal, keeping him at the club until June 2031. He was due to have a medical in Vila-real before an official unveiling on 26 August, becoming the third Canadian on Villarreal's books alongside winger Tajon Buchanan and forward Tani Oluwaseyi.

Villarreal have been looking to add legs and competition in central midfield, and Saliba's profile fits the brief. He is a mobile, combative midfielder who covers ground and wins the ball back, but he is not purely defensive: he can also carry possession forward and help his side break through opposition pressure rather than simply screening the back four. That makes him more of a box-to-box option than a deep-lying passer, with the versatility to play as the holding midfielder when a game demands it. They signed Saliba from CF Montreal only a year ago for a fee in the region of 2 million euros, so selling him for 15 million represents a profit of well over 10 million euros, even once a sell-on cut owed to his old MLS club is accounted for. On the pitch, though, they lose a player who made 45 appearances in all competitions last season, scoring five goals and adding two assists, and who had grown into one of their most effective performers before losing his starting place and being left out of a Europa League qualifying squad for disciplinary reasons shortly before the move went through. Belgian reports suggest the club is already looking at a replacement in central midfield.

Saliba's value rose sharply over the summer. He was part of Canada's squad for the 2026 World Cup on home soil, scored in their 6-0 group-stage win over Qatar, and was a regular feature of a Canada midfield that leaned on his energy and ball-winning under head coach Jesse Marsch. That tournament form, on top of a first season in Europe that saw him progress from a squad player to a key performer at Anderlecht, is what persuaded Villarreal to move for him in this window. Interest was said to have built from several leagues after the World Cup, with Villarreal moving early enough in the window to get the deal done before other suitors could act.

At Villarreal, Saliba joins a midfield still settling into shape after the club's opening two league games both ended in draws, with a trip to Alaves up next. He is unlikely to walk straight into the strongest starting eleven, but his running power and ability to win the ball back give Villarreal another option to rotate through central midfield, while his willingness to carry the ball forward offers an alternative route through matches when patient possession alone is not enough. How quickly he adapts to a more physical, tactically demanding league than Belgium's will determine how soon he becomes a regular starter.
