Wolverhampton Wanderers have confirmed the signing of Rafiki Saïd from Belgian side Standard Liege, with the deal reported at around €9-10m (roughly £7.7m). The 26-year-old left winger has put pen to paper on a three-year contract at Molineux, with the club holding the option of a further 12 months. It is the first signing of the Cesar Peixoto era at Wolves, arriving early in pre-season so the new head coach can get him working with the squad straight away.
Peixoto made clear that Saïd's pace and directness were exactly what he was looking for. "He's a fast player and one versus one running is a very important characteristic for us," the head coach said, adding that Saïd is "a strong guy, he's quick and athletic" with the mentality to adapt quickly to English football. Technical director Matt Jackson said the winger had emerged as one of the club's priority targets, while executive chairman Nathan Shi said the club were pleased to get the deal done in the first week of pre-season.
For Standard Liege, it is a straightforward financial win but a footballing loss. The Belgian club, who have been dealing with well-documented financial pressures, recoup a healthy fee for a player they only signed relatively recently from Troyes. Losing Saïd removes their most productive attacking outlet from last season and leaves a gap on the left flank that will need replacing before their own season gets going.
Saïd's form at Standard Liege backs up the interest. He scored eight goals and set up five more in 38 appearances across all competitions last season, numbers that stand out for a wide player at a mid-table Belgian club. He has also become a regular for Comoros, with eight goals in 21 caps for his country, underlining the end product that goes with his pace.
At Wolves, he arrives alongside fellow new signings Kieran Trippier and Raul Jimenez as Peixoto looks to build a squad capable of pushing straight back into the Premier League after relegation. Saïd's profile as a direct, one-on-one wide threat fits the template Peixoto wants from his wide areas, and with pre-season already under way in Portugal, he should have time to integrate before the Championship campaign starts.
The move gives Wolves a like-for-like upgrade in pace and goal contribution out wide, and with three attacking signings now in before the window has properly got going, Peixoto's rebuild plan looks to be taking shape quickly.
