Chelsea have completed the signing of Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa, with the fee reported at around £117m (about €137m) — a fee that makes the 23-year-old attacking midfielder both a British transfer record and Chelsea's most expensive signing. Neither club has confirmed the exact figure, but the reported fee beats the £116m Manchester City paid for Elliot Anderson earlier in the same window. Rogers has put pen to paper on a long-term deal, reported to be worth six years with a club option for a further season, keeping him at Stamford Bridge until 2033. "I'm so excited," Rogers said after signing. "For me, Chelsea are the biggest club in London and a club I've always admired since I was a kid."
Chelsea have wanted an attacking player who combines physical presence with genuine quality on the ball, and that is what convinced them to move for Rogers. Manager Xabi Alonso is expected to use him in a wide, advanced role — most likely on the left, either in a front three or as part of the back-three system he favoured at Bayer Leverkusen — though he has not committed to one formation. Rogers said conversations with Alonso were "a massive factor" in choosing Chelsea, explaining that the manager's approach "very much fits with the way I see the game, the way I want to play, and the way I want to be me, and be free and express myself." The move also reunites him with Cole Palmer, a friend from their days together in Manchester City's academy, and sees Chelsea win out over Arsenal, who had also been keen.
For Aston Villa, this is a significant loss. Rogers joined from Middlesbrough in 2024 for a fee far smaller than his eventual sale price and quickly became the club's key attacking outlet, helping Villa to a top-four Premier League finish and, this year, their first-ever Europa League title. Manager Unai Emery must now reshape his forward line without the player who had become the symbol of Villa's rise back among England's elite. The club has already begun reinvesting the money, agreeing a deal for Freiburg's Johan Manzambi and opening talks to sign Chelsea winger Alejandro Garnacho, as Emery prepares his squad for Champions League football next season.
The size of the fee reflects the season Rogers has just had. In the Premier League he scored 10 goals and added six assists in 37 appearances, and he was even more decisive in Europe, contributing three goals and five assists in 15 Europa League matches. He scored in the final in Istanbul as Villa beat Freiburg 3-0 to lift the trophy for the first time in the club's history, capping a campaign that established him as one of the competition's outstanding performers and, at 23, an established England international with 22 caps.
At Chelsea, Rogers will compete for a regular starting place on the left of the attack, and his arrival raises questions over the futures of players in similar positions, including Nicolas Jackson, João Pedro and Garnacho, who has since been linked with a move the other way to Villa. How Alonso accommodates both Rogers and Palmer, given the overlap in their games, will be one of the more interesting selection calls of his first full season in charge. Rogers is due to link up with his new teammates during pre-season as Chelsea prepare for the 2026/27 campaign.
