Chelsea have sold Liam Delap to Nottingham Forest for a club-record fee reported at up to £50million, ending a difficult first season at Stamford Bridge for the striker.
Nottingham Forest have completed the signing of striker Liam Delap from Chelsea, paying a club-record fee reported at £45m and rising to £50m with add-ons. The 23-year-old has signed a five-year contract at the City Ground, with Forest confirming the move on their official website. It comes almost exactly a year after Chelsea paid Ipswich Town £30m for Delap, meaning Chelsea recoup their outlay and turn a profit on a player who never established himself at Stamford Bridge.
The fee was reported as agreed on 26 August, with Forest completing the signing and announcing it the following day. Forest saw off competition from other Premier League clubs, including Everton, to land their man.
Forest moved for Delap after a run of home games without scoring, with head coach Oliver Glasner said to have pushed for the striker for some time before the deal came together. Senior forward Chris Wood backed the signing, telling reporters: "We're an ambitious club and that shows with what we're spending on players like him. It will be fantastic to get Liam through the door... it is healthy competition." Delap will compete with Wood and Igor Jesus for a starting spot up front.
Chelsea's decision to sell reflects how far Delap had fallen out of favour under manager Xabi Alonso, who had trained him separately from the first-team squad and reassigned his number nine shirt. Signed as a long-term centre-forward option last summer, Delap instead found himself squeezed out of a crowded attack and was left out of Chelsea's matchday squad in the days before this deal was struck. Chelsea take a profit on the sale, but move into the rest of the window without a specialist backup striker.
Delap's first season in the Premier League with a top-six club never got going. He managed only one league goal in 28 appearances for Chelsea, and three in all competitions across the campaign - a huge drop-off from the 12 Premier League goals he scored for Ipswich Town in 2024-25, form that persuaded Chelsea to sign him even as Ipswich were relegated. Fitness problems disrupted parts of his season at Chelsea, and by the time Forest's interest firmed up he had already been frozen out of the squad.
At Forest, Delap arrives as an out-and-out number nine in a Glasner side that has generally been built around a strong focal point up front, and the hope will be that regular football restores the form and confidence that made him such a prolific finisher at Ipswich. He could be involved as soon as this weekend's trip to Liverpool, giving Forest an attacking option they clearly felt they were missing after their slow start in front of goal.
