Marc Cucurella is a Real Madrid player. The Spain left-back has completed a move from Chelsea worth an initial €55 million, with a further €5 million available in add-ons, and has signed a contract running until 30 June 2032. Both clubs confirmed the deal on 15 June, with the transfer completed after this summer's World Cup while Cucurella was away with the Spain squad.
The move ends a four-year stay at Chelsea, where Cucurella arrived from Brighton in 2022 for a fee in excess of £60 million. He leaves as a two-time trophy winner, having helped Chelsea to the Conference League and the Club World Cup, and made 163 appearances for the club in all competitions.
Real Madrid moved for Cucurella as a priority target for new head coach Jose Mourinho, who wanted an established, World Cup-winning left-back to build his defence around. Real saw off competition from Barcelona, Atletico Madrid and Manchester City to get the deal done, with Cucurella said to have made Real his first choice among the clubs chasing him.
Chelsea's loss is a recognisable one defensively and in terms of experience, though the club had already been planning for life after Cucurella. He was not among the small group of players — Cole Palmer and captain Reece James among them — that Chelsea had designated as undroppable, and the club had lined up Ajax's Jorrel Hato, signed for around £37 million, as his long-term replacement at left-back. Chelsea thanked Cucurella in a statement for his efforts and his part in the club's recent trophy wins, after a spell in which the player had been openly critical of some of the club's decision-making, including the departure of former head coach Enzo Maresca.
Cucurella's form in his final season at Chelsea held up well by the standards of a Premier League full-back. He made 34 league appearances, starting 31 of them, and contributed one goal and four assists, with his goal coming in a 3-2 win over West Ham in January. He kept nine clean sheets across those appearances and remained a regular, high-minutes presence in Chelsea's back line right up until his exit.
At Real Madrid, Cucurella is expected to compete for the left-back spot from the start of the new season, bringing a physical, front-footed style that suits a manager who wants his full-backs pushing forward and contributing to attacks. His versatility — he can also play at centre-back or further up the left side — gives Mourinho options as he reshapes the squad around his own ideas for the 2026-27 campaign.
