RB Leipzig have completed the signing of centre-back Maxime Estève from Burnley, with the Frenchman putting pen to paper on a five-year contract that runs until 2031. The move, confirmed by both clubs on 17 July, is reported to be worth around £21m (roughly €25m), with the fee able to rise further through add-ons. Estève, 24, will wear the number 3 shirt in Saxony.
Leipzig went after Estève as a long-term solution at centre-back, and sporting director Marcel Schäfer made clear what attracted the club to him. "He has many of the qualities we were looking for in this position – height, athleticism, a strong left foot, confidence in possession and the ability to step out and defend proactively," Schäfer said. "Maxime is positive in the way he plays, a tough tackler, vocal and brings a huge amount of energy to the pitch." The powerful left-footer has drawn comparisons to Borussia Dortmund's Nico Schlotterbeck, and Leipzig see him as a defender capable of driving out of defence and starting attacks, as well as competing physically in the Bundesliga.
For Burnley, it is a significant loss. Estève became one of the most reliable figures in their side after arriving on loan from Montpellier, going on to make close to 100 appearances across the club's promotion push, their Championship title win and last season's return to the Premier League. He was named in the PFA Championship Team of the Season and earned the nickname "Steve" from supporters who valued his consistency at the back. With Burnley facing another rebuild in the Championship after relegation, losing their first-choice centre-back is a blow, even if the fee brings welcome funds for the squad overhaul ahead.
Estève's numbers from last season explain why Leipzig moved for him. He started all 34 of Burnley's Premier League matches in 2025-26, making 36 interceptions and 46 successful tackles, clearing the ball more than 200 times and winning 80 aerial duels. It was a strong individual campaign even as Burnley went down, and that mix of durability and output is what persuaded Leipzig he was ready for German football.
A product of Montpellier's academy, Estève made his Ligue 1 debut at 19 against Marseille before making 62 appearances for the club. He moved to Burnley on loan and later signed permanently, featuring under Vincent Kompany as the Clarets won promotion to the Premier League, then again as they won the Championship title following relegation, and once more last season back in the top flight. He has also represented France at Under-20, Under-21 and Olympic Under-23 level.
At Leipzig, Estève is expected to go straight into the heart of defence as the club strengthen for another push in the Bundesliga and Europe. "I'm delighted to be an RB Leipzig player," he said after the move was confirmed. "The club stands for high-intensity, fearless football, continuous progress and big ambitions. That suits me perfectly." His physical presence and comfort on the ball should suit a team that likes to defend on the front foot and build attacks quickly.
