Donyell Malen's move to Roma has been confirmed as a permanent transfer, with Aston Villa receiving a fee reported to be worth around €25m. The Dutch forward initially joined the Serie A club on loan in January 2026, with an obligation to buy that would kick in if Roma qualified for the Champions League. That obligation was triggered when Roma finished third in Serie A, and the striker has now signed a permanent contract running to 30 June 2030.
Roma moved for Malen in January because their attack had been hit hard by injuries. Manager Gian Piero Gasperini later explained that Paulo Dybala, Matias Soulé and Artem Dovbyk were all out injured around the same time, leaving him short of options up front. Malen's arrival, in Gasperini's words, gave Roma "a huge leap forward" at exactly the moment they needed it, and he went on to become the focal point of the attack for the rest of the season.
For Aston Villa, it is a sale that makes sense on paper more than on the pitch. Malen had struggled for regular football at Villa Park this season, restricted to a handful of Premier League starts as Ollie Watkins, Morgan Rogers and Emiliano Buendía took priority in attack, despite Malen having been voted the club's Player of the Month as recently as November. Losing him permanently costs Villa a forward with genuine top-flight quality, even if he was not featuring regularly, and the sale also brought welcome balance to the books under the Premier League's profit and sustainability rules.
The move has been transformed by Malen's form in Italy. Since arriving in January he has scored 15 goals in 20 appearances for Roma, with 14 of those goals and two assists coming in 18 Serie A outings. That run of form was central to Roma reaching the top four and securing Champions League football for the first time in seven years, a run capped by a 2-0 win over Verona on the final day of the season.
Malen has settled quickly into Gasperini's side, with the manager handing him a central role in the attack rather than easing him in gradually. The forward has credited that trust for his rapid impact, saying Gasperini "made me feel important straight away and at the heart of the project," and pointing to a decisive penalty at Parma as one of the key moments of Roma's season. He also said the ambition of the club, and the project Gasperini is building, were what convinced him to commit to a permanent deal rather than return to England.
Roma now go into next season with a proven Serie A goalscorer locked down on a long-term contract and Champions League football to offer him. For Villa, the sale closes the book on a move that never quite worked domestically, even though the player at the centre of it was performing well enough elsewhere to earn a permanent switch and a new contract to 2030.
