Ajax have completed the signing of Caio Henrique from Monaco, ending the Brazilian left-back's six-year stay in the principality. The fee is reported at around €10m, with add-ons that could push the final package up towards €13m or €14m depending on performance clauses. The 28-year-old has signed a four-year contract, keeping him at the club until the summer of 2030.
The move is part of a much bigger rebuild at Ajax. Technical director Jordi Cruyff has been clearing out large numbers of players this summer and has been open about wanting to bring in a wave of new signings to reshape the squad. Left-back was identified as an area needing reinforcement, and Cruyff made clear the club had been tracking Henrique for some time. Announcing the deal, he said: "We're delighted to welcome Caio to Ajax. We've worked hard on bringing him to the club for quite some time, so we're pleased to have completed the deal. He is a player who brings a wealth of experience and leadership. With his qualities, he will be a valuable addition to the squad and someone who can make an immediate impact." His versatility also appealed — he can play at left-back, in central defence, or in midfield, which suits a squad being rebuilt on a budget.
For Monaco, it's the departure of a player who became one of their most reliable attacking outlets from full-back. Signed from Atlético Madrid in 2020 for around €8m, Henrique went on to make more than 200 appearances for the club, contributing 34 assists in 158 Ligue 1 games and regularly ranking among the division's top playmakers from a defensive position. Monaco are simultaneously losing fellow left-back Kassoum Ouattara, who is linked with a move elsewhere, and are lining up Nazinho from partner club Cercle Brugge as a replacement — leaving a gap in experience and leadership on that flank that will need to be filled.
Henrique's final season in Monaco colours was a slightly quieter one by his standards. He made 22 Ligue 1 appearances, totalling 1,536 minutes with two assists, and featured nine times in the Champions League. It's a modest return next to his peak years, but he remained a regular starter when fit and continued to get forward — over his six seasons at Monaco he created around 190 chances, including 66 from set pieces, underlining the attacking threat he offers from deep.
At Ajax, he's likely to be used as an attacking left-back who pushes forward to support the front line rather than a purely defensive option. He has a reputation for getting into advanced areas and picking out the final pass, and his set-piece delivery adds another string to Ajax's bow. Given his versatility, he could also provide cover in central defence or midfield if needed. For a rebuilding Ajax side looking to add experience and leadership as well as quality, Henrique fits the profile Cruyff has been targeting.
