Club Brugge have completed the signing of Jan Virgili from Mallorca, triggering the 20-year-old winger's €12 million release clause to get the deal done. The Spaniard has signed a long-term contract at Jan Breydel Stadium running until the summer of 2031. Because Virgili came through Barcelona's La Masia academy before leaving for Mallorca last year, his boyhood club retain a 40% sell-on clause in the deal and will bank close to €5 million from the sale.
The move fills a gap left by Christos Tzolis, who left Bruges for Arsenal for a fee in the region of £34 million earlier in the transfer window. Brugge had been tracking Virgili for weeks and saw off interest from Ajax, who had identified him as an option to strengthen their own left flank. Head coach Ivan Leko wanted a quick, direct wide player to help replace Tzolis's goal threat, and Virgili's acceleration and dribbling in tight areas were the qualities that persuaded the Belgian champions to move for him. Though right-footed, he plays mainly off the left, cutting inside onto his stronger foot, but he is also comfortable on the right.
For Mallorca, this is a loss they could do little to prevent. The Balearic club signed Virgili from Barcelona only last August on a five-year contract, hoping to build their attack around him, but relegation from La Liga last season triggered a clause that cut his release fee from an initial €30 million down to €12 million. That made him instantly affordable for clubs across Europe, and Mallorca were always going to struggle to keep hold of one of their most saleable assets while playing Segunda División football this season. Losing Virgili removes their most direct attacking outlet and one of the division's most closely watched young wingers.
Virgili made 31 La Liga appearances for Mallorca last season, scoring twice and setting up four goals as the club were relegated. He made his senior debut against Real Madrid and quickly became a regular starter despite his age, valued for his explosive first few steps and his ability to beat a full back in one-on-one situations. Before his move to Mallorca, he had been prolific at youth level, scoring five goals in ten games as Barcelona won the UEFA Youth League during his one season in the club's academy.
At Brugge, Virgili joins a squad still adjusting to life without Tzolis and will be expected to grow into a bigger role over time rather than replicate that output immediately. His pace and directness suit the tempo of Belgian football, and at 20 he arrives with time on his side to develop under Leko in both the league and Europe. The length of his contract suggests Brugge see this as a long-term investment rather than a quick fix, with the club backing him to become the kind of attacking threat Tzolis was before his move to Arsenal.
