PSV Eindhoven have confirmed the signing of Sven Mijnans from AZ Alkmaar, with the Dutch champions paying a reported fee of €13m for the 26-year-old midfielder. Mijnans has signed a five-year contract running until the summer of 2031 and will wear the number 21 shirt in Eindhoven.
PSV had tried to sign Mijnans in the summer of 2025, but AZ blocked the move at the time. A year on, with Mijnans out of contract sooner and having made his intentions to leave clear, the two clubs reached an agreement and PSV got their man as their first signing of the summer window.
Football director Earnest Stewart said PSV had tracked Mijnans for several years and had watched him improve every season, describing him as an intelligent, versatile midfielder with a strong work rate who consistently produces goals and assists. That combination of graft and end product is exactly what PSV were short of after losing Ismael Saibari, who left for Bayern Munich in a deal worth up to €55m earlier in the window.
AZ's technical director, Niels van Duinen, said Mijnans had made an enormous contribution during his time at the club and had developed into a complete midfielder — someone who mattered not just for his goals and assists but as a playmaker and a leader in the dressing room. He added that Mijnans had pushed for the move himself and wished him well for the next step in his career.
AZ will feel the loss on the pitch as much as in the dressing room. Mijnans joined the club from Sparta Rotterdam in January 2023 and went on to make over 150 appearances, wearing the captain's armband and becoming the club's main creative outlet from midfield. Replacing that level of goals, assists and leadership in one window will not be straightforward for AZ.
The form that convinced PSV to come back for him was hard to ignore. In the 2025-26 season Mijnans was directly involved in more than 30 goals from midfield, finishing the campaign with 21 goals and 9 assists in 50 appearances across all competitions for AZ — remarkable output for a central midfielder and a big reason PSV were willing to meet AZ's valuation this time round.
At PSV, Mijnans is expected to operate as an attacking midfielder, either just behind the striker or from a wider central role, where his eye for a pass and knack for arriving in the box can be put to use. Speaking after the move was announced, Mijnans said it felt like the perfect next step in his career, pointing to PSV's ambitions to win the league title and compete in the Champions League. With Saibari gone and the champions looking to reload their midfield options, Mijnans arrives with a clear route into Peter Bosz's side from day one.
