Sporting CP have completed the signing of Sergi Altimira from Real Betis, confirming a deal worth a fixed fee of around €18.5m that could rise further with add-ons. The move was finalised on 30 June, with the 24-year-old defensive midfielder putting pen to paper on a contract running until 2031 and carrying an €80m buyout clause.
Sporting had to see off competition from RB Leipzig, among other suitors, to get the deal done, with reports in Spain describing Sporting as having moved decisively once it became clear Altimira was open to leaving Betis. The transfer also carries some knock-on financial detail: Getafe, who sold Altimira to Betis in 2023, are due a sell-on percentage, while Barcelona — where Altimira spent seven years as a youth player at La Masia before starting his senior career at Sabadell — are entitled to a training compensation payment as part of the deal.
Sporting have moved for Altimira because he fits the mould of a composed, ball-playing holding midfielder who can break up attacks and keep possession moving under pressure, exactly the profile head coach Rui Borges wants shielding his back four as the club prepares for another Champions League campaign. Speaking after signing, Altimira said the move made sense because Sporting had shown him he was wanted: "There was a lot of interest from them, they were very keen to sign me, and a player has to go where they feel they are most wanted." He also pointed to his existing relationship with goalkeeper Rui Silva, his former Betis teammate, as a factor in settling in quickly.
For Real Betis, this is a significant departure. Altimira joined from Getafe in 2023 and went on to make 110 appearances across three seasons, becoming a regular fixture in Manuel Pellegrini's midfield during a period that saw the club reach the Europa Conference League final and qualify for the Champions League. Betis have already been linked with midfield replacements, including Alavés's Antonio Blanco and Rangers' Nicolas Raskin, as they look to reshape the middle of the park following his exit.
Altimira's recent form had shown some dip in regular starts even as his reputation grew. In La Liga during the 2025/26 season he made 24 appearances, but only 13 as a starter, contributing one goal and two assists across 1,182 minutes, with a further three Copa del Rey outings. It is a rotational rather than nailed-on-starter record, but it came in a Betis side competing on multiple fronts, and his underlying defensive work — tackling, interceptions and passing under pressure — is what convinced Sporting to make him a priority target.
At Sporting, Altimira should slot into a holding role in front of the back line, giving Rui Borges a defensively secure option who can also progress the ball into midfield areas the Portuguese champions like to dominate. With a long contract and a high buyout clause attached, the club clearly see him as part of their long-term plans rather than a short-term squad filler, particularly with Champions League football to prepare for next season.
