Atletico Madrid have completed the signing of Denmark international Morten Hjulmand from Sporting CP, with the 27-year-old putting pen to paper on a contract running until June 2031. The deal is reported to be worth a fixed fee of around €40m, with a further €5m in possible add-ons taking the total package up to roughly €45m. That figure is well below the €80m release clause written into Hjulmand's Sporting contract, suggesting Atletico negotiated a lower price rather than triggering the clause outright.
For Diego Simeone, this is a deal built around a very specific need. Atletico's midfield has long depended on a defensive-minded holding player to sit in front of the back line, and Hjulmand fits that brief closely. He is a physically imposing, ball-winning number six who screens the defence, breaks up opposition attacks and is comfortable carrying the captain's armband — a role he held at Sporting. His former manager at Sporting, Ruben Amorim, now in charge at AC Milan, has previously rated him above both Joao Palhinha and Manuel Ugarte for all-round quality, calling him the most complete of the three.
Sporting lose a genuine leader and one of the most reliable midfielders in Portuguese football. Hjulmand joined the club from Lecce in 2023 and quickly established himself as a first-choice starter before being made captain, helping Sporting to domestic success under Amorim and then his successors. Losing their captain and defensive midfield lynchpin just before a new season is a significant blow, and Sporting will need to find a replacement who can offer similar composure, physical presence and dressing-room authority.
In terms of recent form, Hjulmand was a regular fixture for Sporting throughout the 2025-26 Liga Portugal campaign, racking up well over 2,000 minutes across the season. He chipped in with goals and assists from deep — a reminder that, while his primary job is defensive, he can also contribute at the other end when Sporting pushed forward. His workrate, tackling numbers and discipline (very few cards for the volume of ball-winning he does) have been consistent features of his game since his move to Portugal, and were central to Atletico's interest.
At Atletico, Hjulmand is expected to slot straight into the base of Simeone's midfield, either as a lone holding midfielder or as part of a double pivot, depending on the system used against different opponents. His remit will be to protect the back four, win the ball back quickly and start attacks with simple, secure passing — exactly the kind of platform role Simeone's teams have traditionally been built around. Given the size of the fee and the length of the contract, this looks like a long-term appointment to the heart of the Atletico midfield rather than a short-term fix.
The move also fits a wider pattern of Atletico strengthening centrally this summer, as Simeone looks to build a squad capable of competing on multiple fronts — La Liga, the Champions League and cup competitions — without leaning too heavily on one or two midfielders. Hjulmand's arrival gives the club both quality and squad depth in a position they clearly saw as needing reinforcement.
