Beşiktaş have completed the permanent signing of Orkun Kökçü from Benfica, converting last season's loan into a five-year contract that runs until June 2030. The deal is worth up to €30m, structured as a nominal loan fee plus a mandatory purchase option, with Benfica due to receive the money in instalments. Kökçü, 25, had already been playing for Beşiktaş since July 2025 under an obligation-to-buy arrangement, so this move simply makes permanent a switch that was effectively locked in from the start.
For Beşiktaş, this was about securing a player they had already built the team around. Kökçü was made club captain in October 2025, only a few months into his loan, and quickly became their most important player on the pitch as well as off it. He is a boyhood Beşiktaş supporter who chose to leave one of European football's bigger stages to play for the club he grew up following, and turning the loan into a permanent deal removes any uncertainty over his long-term future at the Vodafone Park.
Benfica lose a player they paid a record fee for back in 2023, when Kökçü arrived from Feyenoord for €25m plus variables after being named Eredivisie Player of the Season. He made 60 league appearances for the Portuguese club and scored 14 goals, helping them win the Supertaça Cândido de Oliveira and the Taça da Liga. His time in Lisbon soured last summer, though, after a heated clash with head coach Bruno Lage during a Club World Cup win over Auckland City, when Kökçü reacted angrily to being substituted and had to be pulled away from the manager by team-mate Kerem Aktürkoğlu. He asked to leave soon after.
There has been no drop-off in his form since moving to Istanbul. Across the 2025-26 Süper Lig season Kökçü was Beşiktaş's most-used outfield player, starting in all but one of their 30 league matches and contributing goals and assists from central midfield. He has captained the side through a turbulent year that saw both Ole Gunnar Solskjær and Sergen Yalçın come and go as head coach, and his own performances and leadership have been one of the few constants.
Vincenzo Italiano was appointed as Beşiktaş's new head coach in the same week this transfer was finalised, giving the club a settled management structure to build around their captain. Kökçü's game is built on progressing the ball from deep, arriving late into the box and dictating tempo, and Beşiktaş's recruitment since his arrival has clearly been shaped around having him at the heart of it. With the move now permanent, he is set to remain the focal point of their midfield and captain for years to come.
