Tottenham Hotspur have confirmed the signing of Jan Paul van Hecke from Brighton & Hove Albion for a reported £52 million, making the Dutch centre-back the club's third signing of the summer under new head coach Roberto De Zerbi. The 26-year-old had a year left on his Brighton contract, and the Seagulls negotiated a 20 per cent sell-on clause as part of the deal, meaning they stand to benefit further if Spurs sell him on down the line.
The move reunites Van Hecke with De Zerbi, who worked with him at Brighton between 2023 and 2024 and pushed personally for the club to bring him to north London. De Zerbi was appointed Tottenham head coach at the end of March, taking over with the club fighting relegation, and steered them to safety on the final day of last season. Van Hecke's arrival, alongside free transfers Andy Robertson and Marcos Senesi, is being read as a reward from the club's hierarchy for that survival job and a statement of intent for the season ahead.
For Tottenham, the appeal is clear: Van Hecke is a comfortable, progressive passer out from the back, a profile De Zerbi has consistently favoured over his coaching career. Alongside fellow new arrival Senesi, he gives Spurs two centre-backs who rank among the Premier League's better ball-progressors, adding a different dimension to a back line that already includes Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven. The idea is to build a defence capable of playing through pressure rather than just defending crosses and long balls.
Brighton lose a player who had become one of their most reliable performers. Van Hecke started all 36 of their Premier League matches last season, chipping in with three goals and three assists from centre-back — notable attacking output for a defender who also kept nine clean sheets. He arrived at Brighton for just £1.8 million from NAC Breda back in 2020, so the club have made a substantial profit on that outlay even before any future sell-on payment. Replacing that level of consistent, ball-playing defending will be one of Brighton's main jobs before the new season.
Van Hecke has also become a fixture for the Netherlands, having made his senior debut in September 2024, and he is expected to link up with Tottenham after this summer's FIFA World Cup rather than before it. That means his early involvement for Spurs will depend on his workload and fitness following the tournament.
At Tottenham, he is likely to compete directly with Romero, Van de Ven and Senesi for a starting centre-back spot, with De Zerbi expected to rotate his back three or four depending on the opponent. Given the manager's clear history with him and his passing profile, Van Hecke looks well-placed to be a regular starter once he is up to speed, rather than a squad rotation option.
