Coventry City have signed goalkeeper Carl Rushworth from Brighton & Hove Albion in a club-record deal, reported to be worth an initial £22.5m and capable of rising to around £30m with add-ons. The move ends Rushworth's seven years on Brighton's books and is understood to have him sign a five-year contract at the Coventry Building Society Arena. Brighton have built both a sell-on clause and a buy-back option into the agreement, giving them a continued stake in the goalkeeper's career even after selling him on.
For Coventry, this is about certainty rather than a gamble on the unknown. Rushworth spent last season on loan at the club and was central to their Championship promotion campaign, starting every one of their 46 league games. Manager Frank Lampard had pursued the goalkeeper for months, reportedly fending off interest from Newcastle and Leeds, and said on completion of the deal: "It's great to have Carl back with us on a permanent basis. He's a top professional, a great character and he had a huge impact on the team to help us get promoted last season." With Coventry preparing for their first Premier League season in 25 years, Lampard wanted a goalkeeper who already knows the defence in front of him rather than an unproven face.
Brighton loses a goalkeeper it developed but never actually used. Rushworth joined the club as a teenager and, despite seven years on the books, never made a single senior appearance for Brighton's first team. Instead he was sent out on six separate loan spells, starting at non-league Worthing and working his way up through Lincoln City and Hull City before his season at Coventry. Selling an England Under-21 international who has just won the Championship Golden Glove for a club-record fee is a strong return on a player who was never going to force his way into Brighton's senior plans, and the sell-on and buy-back clauses mean the south-coast club still benefits if he keeps progressing.
Rushworth's form last season was as good as it gets for a Championship goalkeeper. He played every minute of Coventry's 46 league matches, kept 17 clean sheets — the most in the division — and won the Golden Glove award as the club secured automatic promotion. He was also voted Coventry's Player of the Season, reflecting how much of their rise up the table was built on a settled, reliable goalkeeper behind a well-drilled defence.
He arrives as Coventry's clear first-choice goalkeeper for their return to the top flight. Ben Wilson, restricted to cup appearances while Rushworth was on loan last season, and Ollie Dovin provide back-up rather than genuine competition for the shirt. Given how much of Lampard's promotion-winning side was built on defensive solidity, keeping the same goalkeeper who marshalled that back line gives Coventry a rare thread of continuity as they step up against much stronger opposition.
