Coventry City have completed the signing of centre-back Aurèle Amenda from Eintracht Frankfurt, confirmed by both clubs on 16 July 2026. The 22-year-old Switzerland international arrives for an initial £15.4m, with a further £1.7m in potential add-ons that could push the total towards £17m — reported elsewhere as roughly €18m. He has signed a four-year contract running to 2030 and will wear the number five shirt at Coventry.
The move is Coventry's third and most significant signing of the summer, arriving as Frank Lampard strengthens his squad for the club's return to the Premier League after 25 years away. Coventry won the Championship title in April, sealing promotion with games to spare, and Lampard has been clear that the priority this summer is adding players ready for the physical step up to the top flight. Amenda combines height and aerial strength with composure on the ball, exactly the profile Lampard wants at centre-back — someone who can defend set-pieces and handle physical forwards while still helping build attacks from the back. Amenda himself credited Lampard's persuasion as the deciding factor, saying: "After the first call with the gaffer, I felt the trust and I liked the project, so I feel this is a really good step for me."
Frankfurt signed Amenda from Swiss champions Young Boys for around €9.5m in January 2024, so his departure represents a healthy profit for the Bundesliga club. He made 42 appearances across two seasons in Frankfurt, establishing himself as a first-choice centre-back in 2025/26 and featuring in five Champions League matches. Board member Markus Krösche thanked him on the club's behalf: "We'd like to thank Aurèle for his commitment in an Eintracht Frankfurt shirt. He always conducted himself with professionalism and always put the team first." Amenda is the third player to leave Frankfurt this summer, following Rasmus Kristensen and Mahmoud Dahoud, as the German club reshapes its squad.
Amenda's stock has risen quickly. He made 24 Bundesliga appearances in 2025/26, completing almost 88% of his passes and winning nearly 70% of his aerial duels, while also contributing 26 interceptions and 119 clearances across the campaign. That form earned him a place in Switzerland's squad for the 2026 World Cup, where they reached the quarter-finals before losing to Argentina. He began his career at Young Boys, making his first-team debut at 18 and winning the Swiss title in 2022/23 before his move to Germany two years later.
For a side returning to the Premier League after such a long absence, adding a defender with Bundesliga and Champions League experience — and now a World Cup quarter-final behind him — is a clear statement of intent. Coventry need centre-backs capable of standing up to sustained Premier League pressure while still playing out from the back, and Amenda's mobility and range of passing look well suited to Lampard's approach. How quickly he adapts to the pace and physicality of English football will go a long way to deciding whether Coventry can establish themselves in the top flight this season.
