Barcelona have sold La Masia midfielder Tomás Marqués to Sporting Braga in an €11m deal, ending an eleven-year academy stay after his path to regular first-team football became blocked.

Barcelona have confirmed the sale of academy midfielder Tomás Marqués — known throughout Spanish and Portuguese football as Tommy — to Sporting Braga, ending an eleven-year association with the club he joined at La Masia aged nine. Both clubs announced the move on 21 August 2026. Braga are paying a fixed fee of €11m, with a further €1m available in add-ons tied to individual and collective targets, taking the deal's potential value close to €12m. Barcelona have inserted a buy-back option of €60m and will keep 20% of any future sale — protections the club now routinely attaches to academy departures. Marqués has signed a five-year contract in Portugal, running to June 2031, and will wear the number 16 shirt.

For Braga, this is a statement of intent. The €11m fee makes Marqués their second-most expensive signing ever, level with Mario Dorgeles and behind only Pau Víctor, and he becomes the third player to move directly from Barcelona to the Estádio Municipal, following Abel Ruiz and Víctor before him — a pipeline Braga have clearly decided is worth paying for. He arrives as a central midfielder who came through every age group at La Masia, was part of Barcelona squads that won LaLiga and the Spanish Super Cup, and is regarded in Catalonia as one of the more promising players of his generation. Braga, who have a track record of developing and reselling talent, are betting that regular first-team football will do for Marqués what limited opportunities at Barcelona could not.

What Barcelona give up is potential rather than proven output. Marqués made just two competitive appearances for the first team — coming on for six minutes against Mallorca in February and featuring briefly against Alavés — and spent last season registered with Barça Atlètic, playing 22 games and providing one assist. Hansi Flick kept him involved around the first-team squad, but the arrival of Rodri this summer, on top of Pedri, Gavi and Frenkie de Jong, plus the emergence of academy midfielders Xavi Espart and Brian Fariñas, left Marqués with no realistic route into regular minutes. Barcelona had reportedly fielded interest from Ajax before he opted for Braga's project, and the buy-back clause suggests the club still rates him highly enough to want the option of bringing him back if he develops as hoped.

There is not much senior form to judge him on. Beyond his two Barcelona cameos, his most recent action came in pre-season, when he played 28 minutes in a friendly against Udinese. His case for the move rests less on end product at senior level and more on what he showed across a decade in Barcelona's academy sides — enough for Braga's recruitment staff to sign him as a squad player from day one rather than a long-term development punt.

Announcing the move, Marqués said: "I'm very happy to be here. It's an opportunity to grow, improve and give my best." He added: "I want to improve everything I can, learn from my teammates and coach, and help the team achieve our objectives." A five-year contract points to a club planning to build around him in central midfield rather than use him purely as cover, and Braga's recent history of developing Barcelona academy graduates gives both sides a template for how the move can work.
