Arsenal have completed the sale of forward Gabriel Jesus to Barcelona for an initial fee of around €10m, with the Brazilian signing a three-year contract on transfer deadline day.

Arsenal have sold Gabriel Jesus to Barcelona, with the Brazil international completing a permanent transfer to the Spanish champions on deadline day, Tuesday 1 September 2026. Barcelona paid an initial fee of around €10m (£8.6m), with performance-related add-ons included in the agreement, and the 29-year-old has signed a three-year contract running to the end of June 2029. He travelled to Barcelona on the Monday to complete his medical before the move was confirmed by both clubs on Tuesday, and he becomes Barcelona's sixth signing of the summer.

Barcelona spent much of the window looking for a recognised centre-forward after Robert Lewandowski and Ferran Torres left the club, and their first-choice target, Atlético Madrid's Julián Álvarez, was never made available to them. Jesus emerged as a late alternative, and head coach Hansi Flick made his enthusiasm clear, saying he was "a little surprised" the club had the chance to sign him and that the forward's style "fits with our style." Flick added: "For me he's a top striker and of course for us very important, he can give us a lot of things." Sporting director Deco is credited with driving the move through in the closing days of the window, and Jesus said he had spoken to team-mates including Raphinha, João Cancelo, Rodri and Eric García about the club before agreeing to join.

For Arsenal, the sale ends a four-year spell that began with a £45m move from Manchester City in the summer of 2022 and produced 32 goals in 123 appearances. Jesus had fallen behind Kai Havertz and Viktor Gyökeres in Mikel Arteta's plans for the central striking role and made only three Premier League starts last season. Arsenal's own statement on the move thanked him "for his contribution to the club during his four years with us" and wished him well.

His time at Arsenal was hit hard by a serious knee injury sustained in an FA Cup match against Manchester City in January 2025, which kept him out for a long stretch and made it harder to force his way back into the starting XI once Havertz and Gyökeres had established themselves. With regular football hard to come by, a move elsewhere had looked increasingly likely. Before Arsenal, Jesus scored 95 goals in 236 appearances for Manchester City after coming through at Palmeiras, and he has long been a regular for Brazil.

At Barcelona, Jesus gives Flick a mobile, experienced forward who can lead the line or work from the flanks, joining a squad already reshaped this summer by the arrivals of Anthony Gordon, Karim Adeyemi, Rodri, João Cancelo and Dominik Livaković. Jesus described the switch as the fulfilment of an old ambition, saying: "I have the opportunity now to be here at Barça. I had the opportunity 10 years ago, but life took me in a different direction. But now, I can be here. It's a dream for me." He also acknowledged taking "a significant salary drop" to get the deal done.
