Aston Villa have completed a £30m deal for Southampton centre-back Taylor Harwood-Bellis, the club's replacement for Ezri Konsa following his departure to Arsenal this summer.

Aston Villa have completed the signing of centre-back Taylor Harwood-Bellis from Southampton, with both clubs confirming the move on 1 September 2026. Villa agreed to pay an initial £25m for the 24-year-old, with a further £5m in add-ons taking the total package to around £30m, reported by the club as a fee of €29.2m. Harwood-Bellis has signed a five-year contract at Villa Park. The deal is a big profit for Southampton, who paid Manchester City £20m for him two years ago after a loan spell, before he helped the club to promotion and then completed a permanent move in July 2024.

Villa moved for Harwood-Bellis to replace Ezri Konsa, who left for Arsenal this summer, and the profile is a close match. Unai Emery wants his centre-backs comfortable carrying the ball out from defence and building attacks from deep, and Harwood-Bellis's game is built on exactly that: a technical foundation from his years in Manchester City's academy shows in his passing, with an 85.5% completion rate from more than 3,000 attempted passes in the Championship last season. Like Konsa, he can also play at right-back, giving Emery cover in more than one position from a single signing.

For Southampton, it is a heavy loss. Harwood-Bellis was arguably the best defender in the Championship last season, an ever-present at the heart of their defence, and was named in the PFA's Championship Team of the Year for 2025/26. He captained the side for the final six matches of the campaign and played in both legs of their play-off semi-final. Southampton had rejected an initial Villa bid of more than £18m before a fee close to their £25m valuation was agreed. Manager Tonda Eckert had made clear how much the club valued him before the move went through: "We know how important Taylor is for us. I think he's been the best centre-back in the Championship last season."

Harwood-Bellis's numbers back up that reputation. He made 43 league appearances last season, scored seven goals from centre-back and kept 12 clean sheets as Southampton pushed for an immediate return to the Premier League, only to fall short in the play-offs. His only previous taste of the top flight, in 2024/25, was tougher — Southampton were relegated that season — and it remains to be seen how his game translates against Premier League opposition week after week. He won his first England cap in 2024.

Harwood-Bellis arrives at a club in the middle of a major squad rebuild: his signing was confirmed the same day Villa agreed the sale of Ollie Watkins to Al Hilal, and follows the club-record arrival of Nicolas Jackson, as Emery reshapes his squad on transfer deadline day. He may need time to adjust from Championship to Premier League football, but Villa see him as a long-term, ball-playing centre-back to build the defence around once he has settled in.
