Hull City have completed the signing of Jens Hjertø-Dahl from Tromsø, with the move done for a fee in the region of £10m. The 20-year-old Norway Under-21 international has signed a five-year contract running to the summer of 2031, and becomes Hull's sixth signing of the summer transfer window. The Tigers saw off competition from Rangers and Cardiff City, who had both been tracking the midfielder.
The signing fits a clear pattern at Hull, who are preparing for their first Premier League season since 2017 after beating Middlesbrough in the Championship play-off final at Wembley in May. Hjertø-Dahl's arrival follows the club's record £20m deal for goalkeeper Konstantinos Tzolakis, and more additions are expected before the window closes as Hull look to build a squad capable of competing at the higher level. Hjertø-Dahl is comfortable playing in a central role or slightly deeper, giving Hull's midfield both energy and a goal threat from open play, plus the physical presence — he stands at over 6ft4in — to cope with the step up.
For Tromsø, it is a significant loss. Hjertø-Dahl came through the club's academy from the age of six, made his first-team debut in 2023 and went on to play 105 times for his hometown side across all competitions, scoring 19 goals and adding 11 assists, including appearances in Europa League and Conference League qualifying. Norwegian outlet NRK reported the fee to Tromsø could rise to around 130 million kroner with add-ons. Losing homegrown talent to Premier League clubs is nothing new for Eliteserien sides, but Hjertø-Dahl's departure midway through the season leaves a clear gap in Tromsø's midfield.
His recent form explains the interest. Hjertø-Dahl scored seven goals in 14 Eliteserien appearances this season before the move, making him the division's joint second-highest scorer at the point he left — a striking return for a central midfielder rather than a forward. That output, alongside regular involvement with Norway's Under-21s, is what turned a hometown prospect into a target for three clubs across English and Scottish football.
"I'm very happy. It's a massive club, and I'm really looking forward to playing here," Hjertø-Dahl said after the move was completed. "Everything happened very quickly once I heard about the club's interest." On leaving Tromsø, he added: "The last few years with Tromsø have been the best of my life, and I will always be grateful. But I felt I needed a new challenge, and I believe Hull is the right step for me."
Hull will hope his goal contributions from midfield transfer to the Premier League, where they are likely to be underdogs in most matches next season. A five-year contract suggests the club see him as part of their long-term plans rather than a short-term fix, and with several more signings expected to follow, he arrives as part of a wider rebuild rather than a standalone addition.
