Inter Miami have confirmed the signing of Germán Berterame from CF Monterrey, with the move completed on 31 January 2026 after Miami triggered the striker's release clause. The fee is reported at around $15m (roughly €12.6m), a sum Monterrey have described as the largest they have ever received for a player. Berterame has signed through the end of the 2028-29 MLS season, with a club option for 2029-30, and joins as Inter Miami's third Designated Player alongside Lionel Messi and Rodrigo De Paul.
Miami wanted a proven, high-volume goalscorer to add to the reigning MLS Cup champions' front line, and Berterame's record in Mexico made the case for them. Across four seasons at Monterrey he scored 68 goals in 153 appearances, and 2025 was his best year yet: 21 goals across the Clausura and Apertura tournaments combined, plus three more at the Club World Cup. He finished the Apertura 2025 as Rayados' top scorer, ahead of long-time midfield talisman Sergio Canales. Berterame is also a Mexico international, born in Argentina but naturalised in 2024, with two goals in eight caps and ambitions of making Mexico's squad for the 2026 World Cup.
For Monterrey, it's a significant loss up front. Sporting director José Antonio Noriega confirmed Inter Miami's interest and admitted the proposal was an attractive one for the player, while head coach Domenec Torrent said any club wanting to take Berterame away would have to pay heavily to do it. Monterrey have a ready-made replacement in place, however, having already brought in former Manchester United and France forward Anthony Martial back in September 2025.
Berterame's numbers before the move were still strong: 7 goals and 3 assists in the truncated season he played before his exit, at a rate of 0.56 goals per 90 minutes, continuing the scoring form that made him one of Liga MX's most reliable frontmen. Even with the season cut short by the transfer, he arrives in Miami with genuine goalscoring pedigree rather than reputation alone.
At Inter Miami, Berterame slots into an attack that already features Messi, Luis Suárez, De Paul, Mateo Silvetti and Tadeo Allende, giving the club another out-and-out finisher to rotate through a long MLS season and the club's new Miami Freedom Park stadium, which opens on 4 April 2026. Berterame himself pointed to the broader project rather than just the chance to play with Messi as the deciding factor, saying the club's plans and the quality of the squad were what convinced him to leave Monterrey.
With Designated Player status and a contract into 2029, this looks built to be a long-term addition to Miami's attack rather than a short-term reinforcement, giving Javier Mascherano's squad another proven goalscoring option as they defend their MLS Cup.
