Tottenham have completed the signing of Conor Gallagher from Atletico Madrid, with the England midfielder putting pen to paper on a five-and-a-half-year contract on 14 January 2026. The deal is reported at around £34m, with Spurs moving quickly to get it done after Aston Villa's earlier interest failed to progress beyond a loan proposal that Atletico were not prepared to accept without an obligation to buy.
The move was driven by necessity as much as ambition. Rodrigo Bentancur was ruled out for the majority of the season after hamstring surgery, following an injury picked up in Tottenham's Premier League fixture at Bournemouth, leaving Thomas Frank short of options in central midfield. Gallagher, with his energy, pressing intensity and experience of English football, was identified as the ready-made solution. Frank called him "a top midfielder" with "huge experience across the Premier League, La Liga and with the England national team," pointing to his leadership qualities after previous spells as a captain.
For Atletico Madrid, the sale reflects a player who had slipped down the pecking order rather than one they were desperate to keep. Diego Simeone's midfield became increasingly crowded after the club signed Johnny Cardoso, Alex Baena, Thiago Almada and Nico Gonzalez in the summer of 2024, and Gallagher found himself starting more games from the bench in his second season in Spain. He still made all 27 of Atletico's matches before his exit, but as a rotation option rather than a guaranteed starter, which made a permanent departure easier for the club to sanction roughly 17 months after paying Chelsea around €40m for him.
Gallagher's recent output tells a similar story of a player short on regular game time but far from short on quality. In La Liga this season he made 16 appearances, 14 of them starts, scoring once and adding an assist. His standout moment in Spain came away from the league entirely: he scored the fastest Champions League goal by an Englishman, netting after 27 seconds against Real Madrid in March 2025. Before Atletico, he arrived with a strong Premier League pedigree, having made 136 top-flight appearances across spells at West Bromwich Albion, Crystal Palace and Chelsea, plus 22 caps for England.
At Tottenham, Gallagher should fit straight into the engine room of Frank's midfield, doing the running and pressing work that has characterised his career while offering more of a goal threat than a typical holding player. His willingness to cover ground, break up play and support attacks from deep is exactly the profile Spurs were missing with Bentancur sidelined, and his Premier League know-how means there should be little settling-in period. Gallagher himself was in no doubt about the move, saying: "I wanted to be a Spurs player and thankfully the Club felt the same. It was very easy, it happened very quickly and I'm ready to get on the pitch."
The deal gives Tottenham the depth and physicality in midfield they lost when Bentancur went down, while also adding a player who has captained sides before and brings leadership to the dressing room, in Frank's words. For Atletico, it is a clean exit for a squad player whose minutes were increasingly limited, freeing space in a midfield already well stocked with attacking talent.
