Fiorentina have completed the signing of centre-back Viery from Gremio, confirming the Brazilian's move on a five-year contract that runs until 2031. The fee is reported at €15m guaranteed, with a further €2m available in add-ons, taking the total package towards €17m. Gremio have also kept a sell-on percentage, meaning they stand to benefit further if Viery is sold on in future.
The 21-year-old becomes Fiorentina's first arrival of the summer transfer window, a sign of how highly the club rate him. He beat competition from several other European sides who had also been tracking his progress over the past year, with reports linking him to clubs in Italy, England and France before Fiorentina moved decisively to get the deal done.
Gremio lose a player who only established himself in their first team relatively recently but quickly became one of their most reliable defenders. Viery joined the club's academy in southern Brazil at the age of 10 and was promoted to the senior squad in February 2025. Under manager Luís Castro he was converted from a makeshift left-back into a first-choice centre-back, a role in which he impressed enough to attract sustained interest from Europe's bigger leagues. Gremio have already moved to fill the gap, bringing in fellow 21-year-old centre-back Wallace Santos from CRB, and the club posted a farewell message thanking Viery for his professionalism.
In terms of recent form, Viery made 27 appearances in all competitions during his one full season as a regular starter, chipping in with two goals and an assist — an unusually productive return for a young centre-back. He is comfortable playing on either side of a back line and has also featured at left-back, giving him some tactical flexibility as he adapts to Serie A.
Speaking after his move, Viery described himself as a defender who leans on physical endurance and strength, while also enjoying involvement in build-up play — attributes he said were shaped by studying defenders such as Sergio Ramos, Paolo Maldini and Virgil van Dijk. That profile fits neatly with what Fiorentina, now under Stefano Pioli, are looking to build: a defence capable of playing through pressure rather than simply clearing danger. "It is very exciting for me to be the first signing of the season," Viery said. "I feel very honoured to wear the Fiorentina shirt."
Fiorentina will hope Viery can bed in quickly during pre-season at Viola Park before the new Serie A campaign gets under way, with the club viewing him as a long-term option at centre-back rather than an immediate makeweight.
