Newcastle United have completed the signing of defensive midfielder Nico González from Manchester City in a deal that could rise to £52m, ending his 18-month spell at the Etihad.

The fee is reported at an initial £48m, with a further £4m in add-ons taking the total package to around £52m — some outlets have the guaranteed figure closer to £50m, but every report agrees on the shape of the deal: a big permanent fee, largely paid up front, for a player City themselves signed from Porto for a similar amount only 18 months ago.

Newcastle's sporting director Ross Wilson made clear this was a targeted deal rather than an opportunistic one. "This was the one we wanted," he said. "He fits the exact criteria we set for this position." Head coach Matthias Jaissle, who took charge at Newcastle this summer, added that González "brings serious quality and elite experience in a key area of the pitch." The club have been looking for a long-term presence in front of the back four, and González's profile fits that gap: a deep-lying midfielder good enough that Pep Guardiola nicknamed him City's "mini Rodri" during his time at the Etihad. At 24, with spells at Barcelona, Valencia, Porto and City already behind him, he arrives with more first-team pedigree than most players his age.

For Manchester City, this is a sale rather than the loss of a key man. González made 59 appearances and scored four goals in 18 months since his £50m move from Porto in January 2025, but he had fallen down the pecking order this season under new head coach Enzo Maresca, who preferred Marc Guéhi in central midfield in City's recent win over Bournemouth. He becomes the fourth senior midfielder to leave the Etihad this summer, following Rodri, Bernardo Silva and Tijjani Reijnders, as City reshape their midfield options. City's own statement thanked González "for his contribution to the Club" and wished him well, with director of football Hugo Viana praising him as "the consummate professional throughout his time at Manchester City."

González came through Barcelona's La Masia academy, making his first-team debut on the opening day of the 2021/22 season as a stand-in for Sergio Busquets, before a loan at Valencia and a permanent move to Porto in 2023. Manchester City brought him to the Etihad in January 2025, and while he never nailed down a regular starting role, he built up a season and a half of Premier League and European experience, including two appearances against his new club. His recent minutes had come mostly from the bench, but his overall body of work — under Guardiola at City and across two other top-flight leagues — is what convinced Newcastle to move for him.

At Newcastle, González becomes Jaissle's second signing of the summer following full back Amar Dedic, and the club's seventh addition overall. Wilson said the club had "worked patiently on this transfer" and that González "was so keen to join." The player himself said he was "really happy to be here at this amazing club" and was looking forward to experiencing St James' Park "as a home player." With the number six shirt on his back, he is expected to give Newcastle a more experienced option protecting the back four as they look to add depth in central midfield for a season that includes European football.
