Strasbourg have confirmed the signing of Diogo Sousa from Vitória de Guimarães in a permanent deal reported at around €10m, with the Ligue 1 club tying the 20-year-old midfielder down until 2031. Vitória's president Rui Rodrigues confirmed the fee after the move was announced, with the club saying Sousa's career would 'continue in France' from the start of the 2026/27 season.
Strasbourg had an obvious gap to fill in midfield. Valentin Barco is expected to leave the club, and Rafael Luis's loan spell ended without Strasbourg taking up the option to sign him permanently, leaving a hole in the engine room that Sousa is being brought in to fill. Strasbourg, who operate under the same ownership group as Chelsea, have built a reputation in recent seasons for identifying promising young players from smaller leagues and giving them a platform in Ligue 1, and Sousa fits that profile: a technically comfortable, left-sided pivot who likes to carry the ball out from deep and find passes into the final third.
For Vitória, this is a significant loss both on and off the pitch. Sousa joined the Guimarães academy at the age of eight and had been with the club for more than a decade before finally breaking into the first team this season. He was a fixture in the side that won the Taça da Liga, and losing a genuine local product — he is from nearby Barrosas — who had just established himself as a first-team regular is a blow, even with the transfer fee softening it. Vitória have a strong recent record of developing and selling young talent, and Sousa becomes the latest name to follow that path out of the club.
This was Sousa's breakthrough campaign. He made close to 30 appearances across all competitions for Vitória in 2025/26, scoring once and adding an assist, having previously been restricted to fringe involvement. Deployed in a double pivot within Vitória's 4-2-3-1, he built a reputation as a progressive passer who ranked among the better midfielders in the Portuguese top flight for moving the ball into advanced areas, rather than as a goal-getter. His performances earned him recognition at Portugal U21 level and made him one of the most talked-about young midfielders in the league by the end of the season.
At Strasbourg, Sousa is expected to compete for a midfield role rather than walk straight into the side, given the squad depth the club has assembled. His profile — a deep-lying midfielder comfortable carrying the ball and playing forward passes — suggests he could be used either as a defensive-minded pivot or in a slightly more progressive role, depending on how Strasbourg's midfield shapes up once the rest of their summer business is done. Given his age and the length of his new contract, the move looks designed with development in mind rather than an instant fix.
