Barcelona have signed Anthony Gordon from Newcastle United in a deal worth £69m (€80m), with the England winger putting pen to paper on a five-year contract. The move was announced on 29 May 2026, with Gordon presented to Barcelona's press the same evening. The fee is understood to be around €70m up front, with a further €10m payable in add-ons.
The move brings an end to Gordon's three-and-a-half-year spell on Tyneside, where he arrived from Everton in January 2023 for £45m. He leaves as a genuine success story: 152 appearances, 39 goals and 28 assists, and a player who went from Championship loanee to full England international during his time at the club. Newcastle have moved quickly to address the gap, agreeing a deal to sign Hoffenheim's Bazoumana Toure for around £43m.
Barcelona manager Hansi Flick is reported to have driven the signing personally, having identified Gordon's work rate and pressing intensity as exactly what his front line needed. Flick wants his attackers hunting the ball back high up the pitch, and Gordon's engine fits that demand. He also adds serious pace to a Barcelona side that has at times lacked a real out ball in behind defences, and his ability to play across the front line, either wide on the left or through the middle, gives Flick more options for rotation and can take some of the attacking burden off Raphinha.
For Newcastle, losing Gordon means losing their sharpest attacking outlet from a stand-out season. He scored 17 goals in all competitions, including 10 in 12 Champions League appearances, form that underlined why bigger clubs came calling. Bayern Munich and Liverpool were also credited with interest before Barcelona moved decisively. Manager Eddie Howe said the club was "disappointed to lose Anthony from our squad" but recognised it as "a big opportunity for him," adding that Gordon's development into an England international was a testament to his work at the club, and wishing him well for the season ahead and the World Cup.
Gordon, 25, has continued to look sharp on the biggest stage since the move, featuring for England at the World Cup this summer. At his Barcelona unveiling he answered questions in Spanish, saying supporting the club had been a childhood ambition. With his pace, work rate and versatility across the front three, he arrives as both an immediate contender for a starting berth and extra competition that should sharpen Barcelona's attacking options through a long season.
