Manager Derek McInnes made clear the move addresses a specific need up front. "Strengthening our options in the forward areas has been a real target and focus for us throughout this window," McInnes said, adding that Kim "will add another exciting dimension to the squad" and is "a talented young player with excellent technical ability, energy and a real desire to develop." Kim himself said he was "so happy to sign for Rangers," citing the size of the club and its supporters as part of the appeal.

For Girona, it means losing a player they brought through from 2022 and had earmarked as a longer-term prospect. Kim impressed with the club's B team before making his La Liga debut in October 2024 and going on to feature in the Champions League. With a release clause in place, Girona had little scope to resist once Rangers moved for him, and the Catalan club now has to fill the gap on the wing without the compensation of a fee they could negotiate upward.

Kim's most recent football came away from Girona altogether. He spent last season out on loan at FC Andorra in the Spanish second tier, where he made 40 appearances and contributed six goals and four assists — a heavy season of senior football for a player who only turned 20 this year, and one that will have shaped Rangers' view of him as ready for regular first-team rugby north of the border.

Primarily a left-sided attacker who can also operate on the right, Kim gives McInnes another option in wide areas alongside the squad's existing wingers. He was not part of Rangers' squad for the Conference League play-off second leg against Jablonec, with international clearance still to be finalised, but he is available to be included for the domestic trip to Aberdeen. Given his age and the amount of first-team football he has already had in Spain, he is more likely to be introduced gradually than thrown straight into a settled starting XI.

The move continues a busy summer at Ibrox, with Rangers still expected to add further to their forward line before the Scottish transfer deadline. For Girona, replacing a player of Kim's profile — young, versatile and already tested in La Liga and Europe — will be one of the tasks facing their recruitment staff for the rest of the window.
