West Ham have completed the signing of Norway winger Edvin Austbø from Viking FK in a deal reported at around £10m, described in Norway as the biggest transfer in the country's football history.

West Ham United have completed the signing of Norway winger Edvin Austbø from Viking FK, with neither club confirming an exact fee. Reports in England and Norway have put the transfer in the region of £10m, or around €12.9m, with Norwegian outlets citing a base fee of roughly 140m kroner plus performance add-ons. Whatever the final figure, it is being described in Norway as the biggest sale in the country's football history. Austbø, 21, has signed a four-year contract with West Ham, with the option of a further year, and will wear the number 35 shirt.

The move fills the gap on West Ham's left flank left by Crysencio Summerville, who departed for Saudi Arabia this summer as the Hammers reshape their squad following relegation from the Premier League. Nils Koppen, West Ham's director of player recruitment, said the club had "tracked [Austbø] closely for some time", adding: "He has made very impressive progress and built strong experience in Norway, and there has been a lot of interest in him across Europe." Austbø said it "feels really good to be a Hammer" and that he had watched English football as a boy, and pointed to talks with head coach Nuno Espírito Santo and Koppen: "The talks I had with Nuno and Nils Koppen were amazing."

For Viking, it is a heavy loss. Austbø said leaving was "a very special day", explaining: "Viking has been a huge part of my life for as long as I can remember. I have grown up in this club, both as a football player and as a person, and got to experience things I dreamed of as a little boy." He departs a club that won the Eliteserien title and reached the Champions League with him in the side, and one still fighting Bodø/Glimt for another domestic title this season.

His stock rose sharply in 2025, when he scored six goals and set up seven more as Viking won the Eliteserien for the first time in 34 years, form that earned him the league's Young Player of the Year award. He has kept contributing since, scoring in Viking's Champions League play-off win over Dinamo Zagreb to help send the club into this season's competition proper. He is also a Norway Under-21 international.

Austbø arrives at a West Ham side still adjusting to Championship football, with only two points from their opening two league games under Nuno Espírito Santo. He is expected to compete for the left-wing role Summerville vacated, with his pace and directness seen as suited to a team built for an immediate promotion push. Given how quickly this deal came together in the closing days of the window, he could be involved in a matchday squad soon.

The deal was completed with the transfer window still open, and West Ham are expected to remain busy before it shuts. The club are also working on defensive reinforcements, with senior centre-back Jean-Clair Todibo expected to leave before the deadline.
