McNeil, 26, left Everton for Crystal Palace on 11 Aug as the other half of the Johnson deal, signing a four-year contract. He ends a four-year spell at Everton and had been close to joining Palace in January before that move collapsed on paperwork.
FPL: McNeil should be removed from all Everton projections and any Everton-based differential plans. His exit clears the left/wide rotation and hands minutes to Johnson, George and Dibling.
Everton and Crystal Palace confirmed a rare straight swap on 11 Aug: Wales winger Brennan Johnson joins Everton on a four-year deal for an undisclosed fee, seven months after a £35m move from Tottenham to Palace. He is Everton's fifth summer signing after Rohl, Hackney, George and Norgaard. Moyes publicly backed him to rediscover his form.
FPL: Johnson arrives as a direct replacement for McNeil on the right flank and should start regularly, making him a cheap attacking option worth monitoring. Temper expectations: he failed to score in 26 Palace appearances.
Jordan Pickford was not in the squad for the 12 Aug friendly at Murrayfield, with Mark Travers starting in goal. He had still not returned to training after England's World Cup run and was reported as set to rejoin later in the week. He is not injured; this is an extended post-tournament break.
FPL: Pickford has played no pre-season minutes and is unlikely to feature against Lille on 15 Aug, leaving roughly a week of training before the 22 Aug opener. He remains the clear No 1 when available, but the ramp-up is tighter than previously assumed.
At Murrayfield on 12 Aug, Everton started Travers; Patterson, Tarkowski (c), Keane, Mykolenko; Armstrong, Hackney, Dewsbury-Hall; Ndiaye, Barry, George. Ndiaye converted a 36' penalty and played 64 minutes before Beto replaced him; Barry (27') and George (73') also scored. Sky's report said Ndiaye, Barry and George 'looked in excellent nick'.
FPL: Ndiaye is sharp and taking penalties in pre-season, strengthening his case as Everton's main attacking asset. Barry starting ahead of Beto is a mild nudge in that striker battle, but one experimental friendly XI is not conclusive.
Everton confirmed the signing of Denmark midfielder Christian Norgaard from Arsenal on 5 August for an undisclosed fee reported at around £7m, on a contract until June 2028. He is Everton's fourth summer signing after Merlin Rohl, Tyrique George and Hayden Hackney.
FPL: A defensive midfielder with minimal attacking returns — not an FPL target himself, but he compresses the minutes of Everton's other central midfielders.
Norgaard revealed Moyes and Mikel Arteta both convinced him to move, saying he 'needed a change and to play a bigger football role'. He is expected to sit in front of the back four, filling the gap left by Idrissa Gueye's free-transfer exit and by James Garner's post-surgery absence.
FPL: Norgaard should start in the deep midfield role from the opener, but as a defensive pivot he is a low-ceiling FPL asset. The bigger read-through is negative for Iroegbunam's minutes.

Manager & style
Defence-first and pragmatic. Base 4-2-3-1 (dropping to a 4-5-1 out of possession) which Everton used almost exclusively across 2025/26. More possession than under Dyche (468 passes/game vs 385.8; middle-third touches 250 vs 201.8) but still among the most direct sides in the league — Everton played more successful long passes than any other team in 2025/26. Moyes has pushed for more box entries and crosses (20/game vs 17.5 league average) while keeping take-on volume deliberately low. Set-pieces are a genuine weapon (Garner and McNeil the key deliverers). LIVE TACTICAL SHIFT: a back three/five was trialled in pre-season v Bolton (Branthwaite, Tarkowski, O'Brien, Aznou and Röhl all starting across the line) and per FFS 'remains under consideration' for the new campaign — this is unresolved. Rotation tendency unverified for 2026.

- STRIKER — Thierno Barry vs Beto, genuinely wide open. Barry 8 goals in 38 PL and Beto 7 in 37 in 2025/26; the club is actively pursuing Liam Delap (Chelsea, ~£30m). Avoid the whole slot until resolved.
- RIGHT-BACK — Everton's biggest hole. Coleman released, Nathan Patterson in talks with Eintracht Frankfurt, and Jake O'Brien is a converted centre-back who was inconsistent there. Club has openly acknowledged needing 'a right-back (or two)'.
- LEFT-BACK — Vitalii Mykolenko vs Adam Aznou. Aznou (Bayern, 2025 signing, 1 senior appearance in 2025/26) started v Bolton — a real pre-season push.
- CENTRE-BACK PARTNER — Branthwaite vs Michael Keane alongside Tarkowski. Branthwaite's fitness return pushes Keane to the bench; FFS explicitly flags Keane's security as questionable.

The honest list — what this guide could not pin down as of 30 July 2026. Any of these can change the FPL picture before Gameweek 1:
- FORMATION: 4-2-3-1 vs a back three/five is genuinely unresolved — FFS (27 Jul) says the back five 'remains under consideration'. This changes the defender count, wing-back returns and the clean-sheet model.
- ILIMAN NDIAYE'S FUTURE is the highest-impact open item. Al-Hilal have opened talks and personal terms are reportedly agreed; Everton want £70m; no formal bid yet. Determines both Everton's best attacker and the penalty taker.
- RIGHT-BACK is an unfilled hole: Coleman released, Patterson in talks with Frankfurt, O'Brien a converted centre-back. Everton have openly said they need one or two.
- STRIKER identity: Barry vs Beto unresolved, Liam Delap (Chelsea, ~£30m) pursued with Everton reportedly 'front of the queue', and Nottingham Forest circling for Beto. Could be a different player entirely by 1 September.
- James Garner's GW1 availability — 'around opening week' is deliberately vague and Goodison News says he misses Palace. Drives set-piece assignment.
- Branthwaite's durability — returned early from the hamstring problem that wrecked his 2025/26 and has already been rested once as a precaution.
- Jack Grealish: loan expired and he returned to Man City, but he reportedly still wants Everton and Enzo Maresca has not ruled out keeping him. Unresolved — do NOT price him as an Everton asset.
- Transfer fees for all three main signings (Hackney, George, Röhl) conflict materially across Wikipedia, Sports Mole and footballfancast — treat no single figure as authoritative.
- SOURCE CONFLICT ON THE MANAGER: one render of the FFS 'ultimate pre-season guide' (29 Jul 2026) stated 'Sean Dyche continues as manager'. This is contradicted by the Premier League's own official 20-club manager list (13 Jul 2026) and every beat outlet. Assessed as a stale template or summariser error — David Moyes is confirmed.
- Moyes' job security: described as 'on thin ice' with the fanbase after 13th and a seven-game winless finish, facing a tough opening run (Palace, Bournemouth, Man Utd, Tottenham). In-season managerial change is a non-trivial risk.
- The window closes 1 September 2026, AFTER GW1 — the GW1 XI may not survive to GW3.
- FIXTURE NOTE: Everton's GW1 is Saturday 22 August 2026, 15:00 vs Crystal Palace (home) at the Hill Dickinson Stadium, not 21 August.
- Moyes' rotation tendency could not be quantified from any 2026 source — unverified.
