FPL Triple Captain chip: how it works and when to play it

The Triple Captain chip makes your captain score triple (×3) for one gameweek instead of the usual double — so a captain who returns 15 points banks 45. It is a single-use boost (recent seasons have given two per season, split by a mid-season reset), and the data is blunt about where it belongs: on a nailed-on premium in a Double Gameweek, where that player has two chances to haul. The exact 2026/27 chip line-up is confirmed when the game launches (expected early August).

How the Triple Captain chip works

Triple Captain layers on top of the normal captain armband. You still pick a captain and vice-captain before the deadline; the chip simply changes the captain's multiplier from ×2 to ×3 for that one gameweek. The rules that govern it in 2025/26:

Deadline timing and the number of chips are set by the game each season. The above is the confirmed 2025/26 structure from the Official FPL API — 2026/27 chip counts, the reset gameweek and any rule tweaks are re-verified on this page at game launch.

The most-played chip in FPL

Across the completed 2025/26 season the Triple Captain was played 11,616,415 times — more than any other chip (Wildcard 10.2m, Bench Boost 9.7m, Free Hit 8.7m). It is the most-reached-for boost in the game, and the least technical: no squad surgery, just doubling down on the pick you were already making. That popularity is exactly why the timing of it decides so much rank.

When to play it: the Double Gameweek is the payoff window

A Triple Captain multiplies whatever your captain does — so it is worth most when your captain has the best chance of a big score. That points at two situations: a Double Gameweek, where a premium plays twice and has two shots at returns, and a heavy fixture glut where scores run high across the board. The 2025/26 usage data shows managers piling in on both — and getting punished when they jumped on hype instead.

The five busiest Triple Captain weeks of 2025/26, vs the overall manager average that week (Official FPL API)
GameweekTriple Captains playedOverall average scoreContext

GW26994,10658Partial double gameweek
GW17989,47966Festive fixture glut
GW33693,02166Double gameweek

The sharpest lesson is the top two rows. GW36 was a Double Gameweek and the single busiest Triple Captain week of the season — 1,399,208 managers played it, into an overall average of 65. GW13 was an ordinary single week that drew nearly the same crowd — 1,202,761 Triple Captains — into an average of just 35. Almost the same number of chips spent, roughly double the payoff, decided by fixture timing rather than player choice. When a Double Gameweek is confirmed, that is where the Triple Captain belongs.

Who to Triple Captain

The chip amplifies your captain, so the right target is the same as the right captain — only with the downside of a blank hurting three times over. That rewards a nailed, high-ceiling premium: a guaranteed starter, on penalties or set-pieces where possible, in a fixture the model likes. The highest-scoring captain assets of 2025/26 give the profile:

Haaland was the archetype: 239 points at 6.8 per game, and the most-captained player in 34 of 38 gameweeks. But note the ceiling that Triple Captain is really chasing — the season's biggest single-player haul was J.Timber's 24-point GW2 for Arsenal, which would have banked 72 on the armband. Ceilings like that are rare and hard to call in advance, which is why the chip lives with the fixture, not the punt. How Bawler flags the best Triple Captain window

Bawler pairs the timing logic above with model fixture data to rank the best windows for the chip. Each candidate captain is priced through our per-fixture win, clean-sheet and goal-expectation probabilities into a captain expected return — doubled across both legs of a Double Gameweek — and the highest-ranked window is the Triple Captain call. These are disclosed as model projections, not guarantees, and every one is settled against real results on our public record.

The 2026/27 rules note

FPL has reworked its chip system in recent seasons — the second set of each chip and the mid-season reset arrived in 2025/26. Everything above describes the 2025/26 structure and figures, taken straight from the Official FPL API for the completed season. How many Triple Captains you get, and the exact reset gameweek, are set by the game each year and are confirmed only when the 2026/27 game launches. We re-verify this page against the API on launch day and update the rules and windows then.
