How to change your FPL team name
You change your Fantasy Premier League team name for free from Team Details: open it on the website or the app, edit the Team Name field and save. The catch is timing — in recent seasons you could rename freely before the season started, but names locked once Gameweek 1 kicked off. So settle it before the first deadline; FPL confirms the exact 2026/27 lock rule at game launch. The other limits are a 20-character cap and a ban on offensive names.
Change it on the web (30 seconds)
- Sign in at the official Fantasy Premier League site with your account.
- Open My Team from the top menu (some layouts show it under Pick Team).
- Scroll to Team Details (also labelled Game Settings on some views).
- Clear the Team Name field and type your new name (20 characters or fewer).
- Press Save. The change applies immediately and does not affect your points or rank.
The same Team Details panel is where you set your favourite Premier League club — equally cosmetic, and similarly best settled before the season starts. Neither changes your squad, your budget or your score.
Change it on mobile
The official Premier League app carries the full FPL game. To rename your team there:
- Open the app (or the FPL site in your phone's browser) and sign in.
- Go to My Team, then tap through to Team Details.
- Tap the Team Name field, delete the old name and type the new one.
- Tap Save. If your mobile menu hides Team Details, load the FPL site in a browser instead — the field is identical.
When does the team name lock?
Before the season starts: it doesn't. From the moment you register your squad until the Gameweek 1 deadline you can rename as many times as you like, free and instant. Once the season is under way, though, the door has historically closed: in recent seasons the Team Name field locked from the start of the season, and the name stayed fixed until the game reset the following summer. That lock is separate from the weekly gameweek deadline, which governs your squad — your 15 players, captain and chips — not your name.
- Pre-season: unlimited. Rename freely, instantly and at no cost right up to the first deadline — it never affects your points or rank.
- In-season: historically fixed. In recent seasons the name could no longer be edited once the season had kicked off — so don't bank on a mid-season rename.
- Moderation is the exception. FPL itself can rename or reset a team at any point in the season if the name breaks the rules below.
The exact point at which names stop being editable is set by the official game each season and is not prominently documented. Await confirmation at the 2026/27 game launch — and until then, treat the Gameweek 1 deadline as your cut-off rather than relying on a late rename.
The rules: length and moderation
Two rules govern what you can call your team:
- 20-character limit. Team names must be 20 characters or fewer, spaces included. The 2025/26 data backs this exactly: across the top 10,000 managers, 572 teams sat precisely on the 20-character cap and not one exceeded it.
- Nothing offensive or impersonating. The Premier League reserves the right to change, suspend or delete any team or league name it deems inappropriate — offensive language, hate content, or names impersonating officials or brands. A rejected name can show as pending moderation and is reset to a default (your entry ID) until you choose a compliant one.
The 20-character cap is stated as the standard rule and is corroborated by the 2025/26 archive above; re-confirm the exact limit at the 2026/27 launch rather than assuming it carries over.
2025/26 reality check: nearly everyone picks their own
Renaming matters more than it looks, because your team name is the label other managers see beside your score in every mini-league — and in 2025/26 that was a lot of eyes: 13.1m managers played the game. Among the top 10,000 entries, 88.8% had a distinct name (8,880 of 9,998), averaging 12.6 characters. The point is clear: at the sharp end of the game, a personal name is the norm, not the exception.
The names that do repeat are almost all player puns — proof it is worth spending a moment on your own rather than landing on the same joke as dozens of others. Among the most-repeated names in the 2025/26 top 10,000:
| Team name | Teams using it | What it is |
|---|---|---|
| Kinder Mbeumo | 64 | player pun (Bryan Mbeumo) |
| Change Name | 62 | placeholder they never changed |
| Wirtz Case Scenario | 33 | player pun (Florian Wirtz) |
| Saka Potatoes | 21 | player pun (Bukayo Saka) |
| Beef Cherki | 18 | player pun (Rayan Cherki) |
The tell-tale entry is "Change Name": 62 of the top 10,000 teams were still literally called Change Name at season's end — a placeholder they never got round to editing. It takes 30 seconds; the steps above are all there is to it.
Troubleshooting
- Change not showing in a mini-league. League tables cache; give them a while to refresh. Your own team page updates instantly, so if that shows the new name, the save worked.
- "Pending moderation" message. Your chosen name has been flagged for review. Pick a clean, non-impersonating alternative and save again rather than waiting on the flag.
- Name reverted to a number. That default (your entry ID) means a name was rejected or removed by moderation — set a compliant one.
- Save button does nothing. You are likely over the 20-character limit or including a blocked character; shorten it and retry.
- Can't find Team Details in the app. Open the FPL website in a mobile browser and edit there — the field is the same.
Name sorted — now win the league

The name is the cosmetic bit. What actually moves your rank is the squad behind it — and that is a data problem, not a naming one. Start each week from the FPL gameweek hub, catch the rises and falls before they happen on price changes, and read the run ahead with model-based fixture difficulty rather than the flat official 1–5. Every Bawler read is a model estimate with the method — and where it is weak — set out on the methodology page. Analytics for entertainment; model estimates are not guaranteed outcomes.
Bottom line
Changing your FPL team name takes half a minute: Team Details → Team Name → Save, on web or the app — free, unlimited and instant before the season starts. But get it done before the Gameweek 1 deadline: in recent seasons names locked once the season kicked off, with the 2026/27 rule confirmed only at game launch. Keep it under 20 characters and clean, then put your energy where the points are, starting from the FPL hub.
