FPL Gameweek 1 2026/27: deadline, rules and a data-backed opening-week plan

FPL Gameweek 1 is the first scoring week of the season: you pick a 15-player squad inside a £100.0m budget, name a starting XI and a captain, and lock it in before the Gameweek 1 deadline — roughly 90 minutes before the first kickoff of the opening round. The rules below are settled and safe to plan around now. The one thing nobody can give you yet is the 2026/27 specifics — the exact deadline date, launch prices and chip configuration are set when the official game opens (usually mid-July, with Gameweek 1 in mid-August). This guide states what is knowable today and flags every 2026/27 detail as pending; it refreshes as the official data lands.

When is the Gameweek 1 deadline, and how does it work?

Every gameweek has one hard deadline, and Gameweek 1 is no different: your team — transfers, starting XI, captain and vice-captain — is frozen at the deadline and cannot be changed once it passes. The deadline is set at roughly 90 minutes before the first fixture of the round kicks off, so for an opening Friday-night fixture it typically falls on the Friday evening. Anything you have not confirmed by then does not count for the week.

As a concrete reference point, the 2025/26 Gameweek 1 deadline was 18:30 UK time on Friday 15 August 2025 (17:30 UTC), ahead of that season's Friday opener. Use that as the shape of it — a mid-August Friday evening — but treat the exact 2026/27 date as pending: the official 2026/27 Gameweek 1 date and time await confirmation at game launch, and this guide (and the FPL hub's live countdown) update the moment the fixtures are published. We never hardcode a deadline the official game has not announced.

The Gameweek 1 squad rules you can lock in now

The squad-building rules are the stable part of FPL — they have held season to season, so you can plan your opening team around them before prices are even revealed. From the 2025/26 game configuration (Official FPL API), the constraints for Gameweek 1 are:

FPL squad rules for Gameweek 1 (2025/26 game configuration, Official FPL API)
RuleWhat it means at GW1
Squad size15 players: 2 goalkeepers, 5 defenders, 5 midfielders, 3 forwards
Budget£100.0m total — every one of the 15 must fit inside it
Club limitMaximum 3 players from any single club
Starting XI11 starters + 4 bench; any formation with exactly 1 GK, at least 3 DEF and at least 1 FWD
CaptainOne captain (double points) and one vice-captain (insurance if the captain plays 0 minutes)
TransfersUnlimited free transfers until the GW1 deadline — you build the whole squad from scratch at no cost

How to build your opening squad

Gameweek 1 is a budget-allocation problem before it is a player-picking one, and the single most reliable principle is fund your premiums with value, not the other way round. You do not need to own every big name at GW1 — you need a balanced 15 that lets you start a strong XI and react from Gameweek 2 onward. Three planning moves you can make now:

  • Anchor on one or two premiums, then find value elsewhere. The most efficient 2025/26 squads paired a couple of nailed premiums with cheap, ever-present defenders and mid-price midfielders — the same budget shape the wildcard guide lays out with the full points-per-£m evidence.
  • Build against the opening fixtures, not last season's table. A team with a soft opening run is worth more at GW1 than a bigger name facing a hard start. Read those opening runs off the model on fixture difficulty the moment the 2026/27 schedule is out.
  • Know how prices move before you commit. Squad value compounds all season, and early price rises reward getting the popular picks in early — see how the mechanism works on the price-change tracker.

Bawler assembles the highest-projected legal 15 from model expected points and fixture data — a full Gameweek 1 draft squad with a suggested XI, captain and bench order. That opening-week best team lands from Gameweek 1 of 2026/27 once launch prices are released; until then it runs in methodology mode, showing the structure it optimises toward rather than a squad priced on numbers that do not yet exist.

The Gameweek 1 captaincy call

Your captain scores double, so it is the biggest single swing on your GW1 teamsheet — and the opening week is also the hardest to call, because there is no current-season form to lean on. The honest read from 2025/26 is that the crowd's captain is a floor, not a ceiling: in Gameweek 1 the most-captained player (Salah) returned 8 points — 16 as captained, while the single highest score of the week came from Ballard, a £4.5m defender, on 17 points (34 captained). The template pick was safe; it was nowhere near optimal. That pattern held all season — the most-captained player was the week's top scorer in 0 of 38 gameweeks. The full expected-points framing, and how a model ranks captains, is in the captaincy guide.

Bawler's ranked captain shortlist — candidates ordered by model captain expected return, with the vice-captain call alongside — publishes from Gameweek 1 of 2026/27. Every projection is settled against real results on the public track record, including the misses.

Common Gameweek 1 mistakes (with 2025/26 evidence)

The opening week is high variance, and the recurring errors are the ones that spend budget or chips on the least reliable signals. Each of these is backed by a final 2025/26 number:

What over-spending on premiums cost in Gameweek 1, 2025/26 (Official FPL API)
GW1 pickPriceGW1 points
Ballard (DEF)£4.5m17 — week's top score
Gyökeres (FWD)£9.0m1
Watkins (FWD)£9.0m2
B.Fernandes (MID)£9.0m2
Saka (MID)£10.0m3
Palmer (MID)£10.5m3
  • Over-loading the front line. As the table shows, several of 2025/26's most-expensive forwards and midfielders opened with a blank (Gyökeres £9.0m for 1, Watkins and B.Fernandes for 2 apiece), while the single best haul of the week was a £4.5m defender. A GW1 built on premiums alone starves the rest of the squad and rarely catches the week's ceiling anyway.
  • Captaining the template on reflex. The most-captained GW1 pick returned 16 (captained) to the week's 34 — a repeatable gap between the safe pick and the optimal one. Captain the highest expected return for your rank goal, not simply the most-owned name.
  • Burning a chip in the highest-variance week. In Gameweek 1 of 2025/26, 615,421 managers played a chip — 342,779 Bench Boost and 272,642 Triple Captain (about 4.7% of all 13.1m squads) — spending a one-use asset on the single week with the least information. Chips are almost always worth more later, on a known double or a fixture swing; the chips guide covers when each one earns its keep.
  • Chasing pre-season noise over fixtures. Friendlies and transfer hype move ownership, not points. The opening-run signal that actually correlates with GW1 returns is the fixture schedule — build against it on fixture difficulty once the 2026/27 calendar lands.

GW1 = the first scoring gameweek. All figures are final 2025/26 Gameweek 1 numbers computed from the Official FPL API; prices are that season's Gameweek 1 prices. Player clubs are omitted deliberately — the API pull reflects summer transfer moves, not the club each player represented in Gameweek 1. These figures are final and will not change.

The Gameweek 1 numbers to beat

For context on what a good opening week looks like: the average manager score in Gameweek 1 of 2025/26 was 54 points, and the single highest team score of the week was 127. Beating the average is a realistic GW1 target; the top scores are largely variance and are not a benchmark to chase with reckless picks. A balanced squad that starts eleven players with fixtures, captains sensibly and keeps its chips in the bank is doing the opening week right.

What switches on automatically for 2026/27

This guide is in pre-season mode: the strategy and rules above are live now, and the 2026/27-specific data appears here and across the FPL hub the moment the official game opens. When 2026/27 launches, the following populate automatically from the Official FPL API on the daily rebuild — never as an empty table, never labelled "live" before it is:

  • The confirmed Gameweek 1 deadline and countdown, on the FPL hub.
  • Launch prices and early price movement, on the price-change tracker.
  • The opening fixture-difficulty matrix and model ratings, on fixture difficulty.
  • The model's opening-week best team and captain shortlist, which will be published once the opening slate is priced.

Start at the FPL hub for the live gameweek picture, size up the armband with the captaincy guide, and plan your chips with the chips guide. How the model builds every one of these calls is on the methodology page, and its accuracy — hits and misses — is on the public track record.

All figures are final 2025/26 numbers computed from the Official FPL API. 2026/27 deadlines, prices and chip configuration await confirmation at game launch and are not asserted here.
