FPL Top Managers — What the Best Actually Own

Fantasy Premier League publishes one ownership number: the percentage of all 13,107,732 managers who own each player. That number is the crowd. It tells you what is popular, not what is working. The more useful question — what are the people actually winning the game doing differently? — has no published answer, because every manager's squad has to be read one at a time.

So that is what this page does. Every night it reads the Overall league standings, takes the top 1,000 managers, and pulls each one's squad, captain, chip and transfers for the most recent locked gameweek. Those 1,000 squads are then counted up and set against the game-wide ownership from the same source. The gap column is the whole point: a player on 60% at the top of the table and 15% across the game is a player the best managers have found and the field has not.

The one-gameweek lag is not a delay we could fix. FPL keeps squads private until a gameweek's deadline passes — that is what stops managers copying each other before the whistle. It means the freshest elite team anyone can ever see, here or anywhere, is the one locked at the last deadline. This page names that gameweek at the top rather than implying it is showing you tonight's teams.

One more limit, and it is the reason you won't find a bench column here. Once a gameweek finishes, FPL rewrites each squad to its post-substitution state — a player who was picked to start but didn't appear is moved down to the bench in the data, and the armband passes to the vice-captain. That makes the XI a manager actually submitted impossible to read back afterwards. Two things do survive untouched: the fifteen players in the squad, and who was named captain. Those are the only decisions this page reports. Everything else here — “scored for”, the formations — is described as the result it is.

Two last things worth knowing. It is a sample of 1,000, not the entire top 1,000 — a handful of managers hide their squads or have deleted their accounts, and those are simply missing. And a high elite ownership is evidence, not instruction: these managers are near the top after a full season of decisions, but they also disagree with each other constantly, and the gap columns are most useful as a list of players to go and look at properly.
