Latest updates
Le Bris described Alderete's World Cup knee problem as "just about stiffness. It's not major" and said of the pair: "probably both of them should be on the bench for Ipswich, I think." Neither was risked in the 2-0 friendly win at Lens on 8 August. Reporting on 11 August said Le Bris had not ruled either out but hinted they may not be ready to start, with Luke O'Nien in line to deputise at centre-back.
FPL: Both carry FPL's own 75% knock flag. Alderete's doubt is not resolved — he has played no pre-season minutes — so keep avoiding him for GW1, and note O'Nien is short-term injury cover rather than a promoted starter.
Adingra hurt his ankle after coming on as a substitute in the pre-season win over Wrexham. Le Bris said on 8 August: "Simon might be a bit longer, so we are still monitoring his ankle and we need to wait." Pictures on 9 August showed him in a protective boot on his left foot at the Academy of Light. No update has followed, and he was absent from the left-wing selection discussion on 11 August.
FPL: FPL currently has no flag on Adingra, so his price and projection look deceptively safe. Treat him as a genuine doubt for the GW1 opener at Ipswich and avoid him until the boot is confirmed off.
The 32-year-old left-back completed a free permanent move to Konyaspor on a two-year deal, with formalities finished on 10 August and FPL removing him on the 12th. With Dennis Cirkin's contract having expired in June and no replacement signed, Sunderland's €33m bid for Toulouse's Dayann Methalie was rejected.
FPL: Reinildo is now the only specialist left-back at the club and should be treated as close to nailed for GW1 at Ipswich. Watch the window to 1 September — a new left-back arriving would reverse this.
Sunderland confirmed on 11 August that the 22-year-old Norwegian defender has joined KV Mechelen permanently on a deal to 2029 with an option for a further year, with a sell-on clause retained. Note FPL has mislabelled this as a season-long loan.
FPL: Negligible in isolation — Hjelde was a fringe defender who spent last season's second half on loan at Sheffield United. It matters only as part of a wider thinning of Sunderland's defensive cover.
Announced by Wrexham on 11 August after a medical on the 10th: £8m initial plus performance add-ons that could exceed £10m, on a four-year deal to 2030. Sunderland posted a farewell piece on 12 August with tributes from director of football Florent Ghisolfi and head of goalkeeping Neil Cutler. FPL removed him on 12 August.
FPL: Minimal direct impact — Patterson spent last season's second half on loan at Millwall and Melker Ellborg was already the established No.2. Robin Roefs remains nailed; Sunderland have signed no replacement, with only reported interest in Ipswich's Alex Palmer.

Manager & style
Pragmatic, defence-first, transition-based. Sunderland do NOT press high as a rule: they sit compact, defend the box and counter. Possession was 42.4% in 2025-26, third-lowest in the Premier League; Roefs launched 59.8% of his goal kicks at an average 67.1 yards; the side won 54.1% of ground duels, the best rate in the league, and ranked 4th for tackles in the defensive third and 3rd for blocked shots (74), with 567 clearances. Attacking output is genuinely poor - 42 goals scored, second-worst penalty-area touches per 90 (15.3) and the worst final-third-entry conversion in the league (20.95%). The saving grace is defensive structure: 11 clean sheets, 48 conceded, and among the best league marks for xG per shot allowed and average shot distance allowed. Sunderland massively overperformed their underlying numbers - xG 40.5, xGA 54.3, xPts 43.5 against 54 actual points, roughly 11 places above their expected-points position - so regression is the consensus forecast for 2026-27. Nordi Mukiele's long throw is a genuine, repeatedly-cited set-piece weapon, and all 25 corners in an early-season sample were inswingers to the back post. Rotation should rise sharply: Europa League football means roughly 50 fixtures, though 2025-26 was a notably LOW-rotation season (Roefs 35 starts, Hume 34, Sadiki 33, Le Fee 33, Alderete 32, Mukiele 32, Xhaka 32) and no explicit rotation policy has been stated.

- PROJECTION, NOT A QUOTED BEAT-REPORTER XI. No true GW1 predicted XI had been published as of 30 July 2026. Synthesised from 2025-26 Premier League starts (Roefs 35, Hume 34, Sadiki 33, Le Fee 33, Alderete 32, Mukiele 32, Xhaka 32, Ballard 24, Reinildo 23, Brobbey 22, Talbi 16) plus the 2026 pre-season shape. Confidence: moderate for the spine, low for the front three.
- TRAI HUME IS THE BIGGEST MODELLING TRAP. His 34 starts were split between right-back and RIGHT WING - Le Bris has repeatedly used him as a hybrid right winger / right wing-back, and did so again v Liverpool. If the engine assumes he is a defender playing right-back, his clean-sheet and positional exposure will be wrong. Fans reacted badly to the wide deployment in pre-season.
- Centre-forward: Brian Brobbey vs Wilson Isidor, with Mayenda sold. Brobbey was top scorer (7 goals, 22 starts + 9 sub) and RotoWire on 27 July 2026 says he is set to be the lead forward with 2,000+ projected minutes. Isidor has by far the better per-minute record (6 goals from 11 starts + 21 sub apps, ~1,158 minutes) and started both friendlies Brobbey missed. A weakly-sourced May 2026 report suggests Le Bris has discussed a two-striker system with Brobbey primary. Brobbey favourite; Isidor a genuine live challenger.
- Wide roles: explicitly called 'a position of concern' by Roker Report (28 July 2026). Talbi had the most wide starts (16, 4 goals). Adingra is back from the Monaco loan but is also the most-linked departure. Nilson Angulo cost a reported GBP 17.5m from Anderlecht in February 2026 but made only 5 starts. Mundle started twice all season yet started v Liverpool. Hume is the wildcard. Genuinely unsettled - and note Patrick Roberts is NO LONGER at the club (permanent move to Birmingham City, 2 February 2026), so any source still listing him is stale.
- Right-back: Nordi Mukiele is the clear incumbent (32 starts, 3 goals, plus the long-throw weapon). Thomas Meunier is experienced Europa League cover but has not trained with the squad. Hume is the third option who often plays further forward.
- Centre-back: Ballard and Alderete were the established pairing. Luke O'Nien started only 5 league games but started and captained both pre-season friendlies while Alderete was away, and is first cover. Reinildo is the left-back in a back four, though the back-five variant would move him inside.
- Goalkeeper: Roefs is firmly No.1 (35 starts) but was phased back in gently on tour after the World Cup, and Anthony Patterson is back from his Millwall loan. Europa League may create a cup-keeper split.
- Midfield: Xhaka is nailed. Sadiki (33 starts), Le Fee (33 starts, 5 goals) and Habib Diarra (15 starts, 2 goals) compete for the two places alongside him, with Chris Rigg and Alan Browne pushing after strong pre-seasons. Dan Neil's exit to Rangers thins the group. Roker Report framed this as Le Bris's 'big midfield dilemma'.

The honest list — what this guide could not pin down as of 30 July 2026. Any of these can change the FPL picture before Gameweek 1:
- MANAGER CONTRACT DATE CORRECTION: Le Bris's 'new long-term contract to summer 2028' was signed on 4 AUGUST 2025, not in summer 2026. Both the Premier League and Sky Sports articles cited in the brief carry that 2025 date, and no separate 2026 extension exists despite specific searching. He is confirmed still in post by the Guardian (25 May 2026), Sunderland Echo (26 July 2026) and safc.com (29 July 2026), so changedThisSummer is FALSE - but the contract event is a year older than the brief assumed.
- SET-PIECE CORRECTION - THE PENALTY TAKER CHANGED MID-SEASON. Le Fee scored against Brentford on 30 August 2025, then MISSED against Brentford on 7 January 2026; Habib Diarra took and scored the next two (Oxford, FA Cup, 15 February 2026; Leeds, league, 3 March 2026). Fantasy Football Scout's table, last verified around GW31, lists penalties as 'Diarra, Le Fee' in that order. An earlier Fantasy Football Scout update from 19 November 2025 covering only GW8-11 showed no penalties and is misleading if read alone, and 2025 pre-season previews naming Patrick Roberts are obsolete because Roberts has left the club. Diarra is the best read for GW1, but this hierarchy can flip in pre-season - re-check.
- FORMATION CONFLICT - GENUINELY UNRESOLVED. Roker Report (30 July 2026) and Sports Mole (28 July 2026) both describe the 2026 pre-season base as 4-3-3, becoming 4-5-1 out of possession. Total Football Analysis (2 November 2025) called it 4-4-2 out of possession / 4-1-2-3 in possession. FotMob logged 4-2-3-1 for the heavily-rotated York City friendly. The Sunderland Echo has described switching between a back five and a 4-4-2. Best formulation: a back four that becomes 4-3-3 / 4-1-2-3 in possession and compacts to a 4-5-1 or 4-4-2 block, with an occasional back five. This matters directly for whether Sunderland field one striker or two, and therefore for Brobbey vs Isidor.
- PRESSING INTENSITY - SOURCES CONFLICT. Total Football Analysis (2 November 2025) put Sunderland's PPDA SECOND-WORST in the league with the fifth-fewest high turnovers; the-footballanalyst (14 November 2025) put them 15th at PPDA 12.95; another summary gave ~12.8 and called it mid-table. The BBC has described them starting matches aggressively with a man-to-man high press, which contradicts the rest. The Leeds United friendly (30 July, Harrison NJ, 23:30 UTC) had not finished at research time, and Wrexham (2 August), Lens (8 August) and Rennes (15 August, home) follow - the Lens and Rennes XIs, once Xhaka, Talbi, Alderete and Meunier are back, will be far better evidence. NOTE: the one 2026/27 XI published by the Sunderland Echo (5 July 2026) is explicitly rumour-based and includes three players who never signed (Oscar Mingueza, Arthur Avom, Arne Engels) - do not use it.
- MAJOR OPEN EXIT RISK ON THREE OF THE BEST FPL ASSETS (all rumour, none agreed, as of 30 July 2026). Robin Roefs: Chelsea reported to be seriously considering a move, with earlier 2026 reports of Chelsea assessing up to GBP 60m and Liverpool and Man City monitoring. Simon Adingra: the most-linked exit, Roma shortlisting him with Sunderland asking around EUR 35m, plus Leipzig, Monaco, Ipswich and West Ham. Habib Diarra: Roma plotting a move for the GBP 30m club-record signing. If Roefs goes, the strongest Sunderland FPL case collapses; if Diarra goes, the penalty read changes. Re-check all three before GW1.
- LIVE INCOMING RUMOURS (rumour only, none confirmed): Dayann Methalie (LB/wing-back, 20, Toulouse) is most advanced - personal terms on a five-year deal reportedly agreed, Toulouse holding out for around EUR 30m, the Toulouse president publicly confirming talks on 29 July, Newcastle withdrawn and Aston Villa enquiring. Also linked: Ernest Poku (RW, Leverkusen, ~EUR 25m), Folarin Balogun (ST, Monaco, ~GBP 40m), Andre-Frank Zambo Anguissa (CM, Napoli, ~EUR 15m, price considered too high) and Matias Soule (Roma). A Methalie arrival would directly threaten Reinildo's left-back minutes; a Balogun or Poku arrival would reshape the front three.
- NO STRIKER SIGNED to replace Mayenda as of 30 July 2026, and Thomas Meunier is the only senior first-team addition. Sunderland's net position is a profit (GBP 0 spent, ~GBP 19-22m in). The window runs to 1 September, Le Bris says the club will keep business 'under the radar' and cannot compete with clubs spending GBP 80m, and the Echo reports he expects the bulk of outgoing business to conclude late. The forward line could still change materially before GW1.
- TWO EXITS AGREED BUT NOT COMPLETED as of 30 July 2026: Arthur Masuaku (LB) to Konyaspor on a free with a two-year deal, formalities pending; and Ahmed Abdullahi (ST, 22) to Eyupspor, permanent, undisclosed. Neither had been officially announced.
- SUNDERLAND HAD 12 PLAYERS AT THE 2026 WORLD CUP - Brobbey, Angulo, Diarra, Roefs, Adingra, Masuaku, Sadiki, Xhaka, Talbi, Alderete, Meunier and Isidor. That is an unusually heavy tournament load for a mid-table club and means several first-teamers begin 2026-27 with a compressed or near-nonexistent pre-season. A slow start and heavier early rotation are plausible.
- COMPETITION CONFLICT: one report (RMC via Yahoo, 27 July 2026, in a Dayann Methalie piece) describes Sunderland as qualified for the UEFA CONFERENCE League rather than the Europa League. The weight of evidence is firmly on EUROPA League - premierleague.com, Wikipedia and the Sunderland Echo key-dates piece all agree, with the league-phase draw on 28 August 2026 and matchday one on 16-17 September. Treated here as Europa League, but flagged.
- SIMON ADINGRA'S STATUS WAS A TRAP. Transfermarkt lists him as an 'arrival from Monaco (end of loan)', which reads like a signing. Reality: Sunderland bought him from Brighton for around GBP 21m in July 2025 to 2030, loaned him to AS Monaco on 2 February 2026 with a buy option, and Monaco declined it (reported 4 July 2026). He is a Sunderland player for 2026-27 and rejoined the squad on 26 July. Treat as a returning first-team asset, not a new signing.
- JOBE BELLINGHAM is NOT part of this window - he left for Borussia Dortmund on 10 JUNE 2025 for a club-record fee (BBC: EUR 32m plus EUR 5m; The Athletic: up to EUR 38m / GBP 32m) with a 15% sell-on clause, on a deal to June 2030. Do not model him as a 2026 departure. Note these are 2025-dated sources, as the event predates 2026.
- SOURCE QUALITY WARNING: onsidearena.com surfaces prominently for Sunderland FPL and set-piece queries but lists departed players as 2026-27 set-piece takers (Adil Aouchiche, and a 'Watson' - Tom Watson left for Brighton in 2025). It is auto-generated and working off a stale roster. Its predicted XI, its FPL prices (Roefs 5.0, Hume 4.5, Xhaka 5.5, Le Fee 6.0, Talbi 5.5, Isidor 5.5, Brobbey 6.0) and its set-piece assignments should all be treated as unverified. The same caution applies to starting11.com, fplai.app and fplpilot.com. Transfermarkt's squad page also rendered scrambled loan annotations (showing Roefs at Millwall and Rigg at Monaco) which are mis-mapped historical rows.
- GOALKEEPER STATS DO NOT RECONCILE: StatMuse gives Sunderland 11 clean sheets as a team but also gives Roefs 8 clean sheets in 35 matches with 34 conceded, which cannot be squared with 48 goals against across 38 league games. Those figures likely mix competitions or are mid-season snapshots. The reliable team-level numbers are the Wikipedia final table: P38 W14 D12 L12 GF42 GA48 GD-6 Pts54, 7th.
- SET-PIECES CONCEDED is unverified - no figure found for 2025-26. On set-pieces SCORED, note a within-season shift: an early-season sample showed set pieces accounting for 43.9% of Sunderland's xG, but across the full season they scored 13 set-piece goals, ranked 18th in the league. Do not over-model set-piece dependence.
- PREDECESSOR left blank deliberately - not verified from a 2026 source, and not applicable since the manager did not change this summer.
- MAYENDA FEE CONFLICT: Wikipedia states GBP 22m, Transfermarkt EUR 22m, Sports Mole GBP 18.9m. All agree it is the window's major sale and that net spend is a profit.
- No Sunderland player carries an injury or availability flag in official FPL data as of 30 July 2026, consistent with the finding that the preseason absentees were World Cup returnees and a visa case rather than injuries.
