FPL rank mode — build to protect a lead or chase one down

Every squad tool builds for expected points. But rank is a tournament — you climb on points the field isn't already on, and you fall on the ones you missed. The twist: for expected rank, chasing points is optimal — the whole difference is variance. So this tilts the same backtested optimiser two ways: Protect covers the template so you move with the field and a lead holds; Chase loads differentials so a good week leapfrogs the pack. Building the optimal squad…

Why rank isn't the same as points

The variance idea, in one read

Here is the counter-intuitive bit most tools miss: to maximise your expected rank, you should just maximise expected points — the rest of the field's average is a number you can't change, so beating it means scoring as much as you can. Everything else is about the shape of the outcome, not its average.

  • Protecting a lead? You want low variance against the field. Own what everyone owns — when the template hauls, you haul with it, and your lead survives. A differential blowing up is the risk you're avoiding.
  • Chasing from behind? You want high variance. Owning the template can only keep you where you are; a differential that hauls is the only thing that vaults you past the managers ahead. You accept a worse floor to buy a better ceiling.
  • Effective Ownership is how the tool measures "the field" — owned % + captaincy % among the top managers. High EO = template (safe); low EO = differential (swing).

The tool tilts the optimiser by boosting template value in Protect and differential value in Chase, then shows the expected-points cost of the tilt so the trade is explicit. It's an honest heuristic for that variance trade, not a promise — and a good posture is the right risk for your situation, not a guaranteed rank.

Method & sources

Player pool, prices and ownership from the Official FPL API; projections from the Bawler xPts model (walk-forward backtest on predicted points). The optimiser is the same £100m / 2-5-5-3 / 3-per-club engine the backtest runs, fed a posture-adjusted value per player. Effective ownership comes from the elite-manager field (top managers) once the season is live; before GW1 it falls back to overall ownership. Cross-check the differentials it favours on differentials and the armband on captain picks.
