Haaland tops GW3 projections, but Bruno keeps the elite armband

The projected-points model has Erling Haaland scoring highest for Gameweek 3, but Bawler's elite-manager sample shows the armband still belongs to Bruno Fernandes, and a defensive crisis at Manchester City has turned a new signing into one of the week's best-value picks.

In short

  • Haaland projects highest for GW3 on 6.03 points, half a point clear of Saka's 5.49.
  • 98.6% of elite-sample managers have the armband on Bruno Fernandes, leaving little room for Haaland.
  • Guéhi projects for 4.69 points at just 19% ownership after joining Man City's injury-hit defence.
  • Foden is the cheapest name in the model's top eight: 4.72 points, £7.0m, only 4.9% owned.

Gameweek 3 locks at 5.30pm on Friday 4 September, and Bawler's projected-points model already has a clear favourite. Erling Haaland tops the list on 6.03 projected points, half a point clear of the chasing pack, with Manchester City at home to Coventry City after a brace in the 4-1 win over Crystal Palace. It isn't really a debate at the top of the model. It's the layer underneath that's interesting, especially once you set the projection against what the best Fantasy managers are actually doing with their squads.

Haaland is the model's pick and the obvious armband on paper. Behind him, though, our elite-manager sample tells a slightly different story. We track the squads of the top-ranked Overall managers every night, and right now 98.6% of that sample has the captaincy on Bruno Fernandes, leaving little room for anyone else, Haaland included. It's easy to see why: Fernandes has just delivered a 23-point haul against Ipswich, a hat-trick and an assist, having been sold by more than 244,000 managers only a week earlier. He's owned by 99.8% of the elite sample against 48.4% of everyone else, a 51.4-point gap, the widest of any player we track this week. The model rates him third for Gameweek 3 on 5.29 points, behind Haaland and Saka, and Manchester United travel to an Everton side that has conceded more big chances than any other team in the first two Gameweeks. That's a case for the armband on its own merits, even without the near-unanimous elite backing.

Second in the projections is Bukayo Saka, on 5.49 points, higher than Fernandes, and yet owned by just 10.5% of all Fantasy squads. Saka is back from World Cup duty and played through Arsenal's Gameweek 2 win with no visible setback, and he's in for a home Gameweek 3 date with Chelsea. The catch is a fitness record that's kept the wider game cautious: he hasn't passed 2,300 league minutes in either of the last two seasons. That history is a genuine reason some managers are staying away, not just a coincidence, and it's worth weighing against a projection that clearly rates him.

Morgan Gibbs-White is third on the projected list at 5.32 points, priced at £7.9m and owned by just 9.1% of squads, with Tottenham up next for Forest in Gameweek 3. Phil Foden is further down at 4.72 points but stands out on price: at £7.0m and only 4.9% ownership, he's the cheapest name in the model's top eight. Both are the kind of gap between what the model sees and what the game has actually bought that this section exists to flag, a reason to look, not a guarantee either delivers.

The most interesting name in the top eight is Guéhi. He joined Manchester City from Crystal Palace this year and projects for 4.69 points at £6.0m, the highest of any defender on the list, with ownership still down at 19%. The context matters: City's central defence has been hit hard, with Rúben Dias out for four to six weeks with a hamstring injury, Josko Gvardiol facing four to five months out after a leg fracture, and John Stones sidelined with a thigh strain. Guéhi arrived in the middle of that crisis and looks close to first-choice by necessity rather than by the usual pecking order. He doesn't yet appear in our elite-manager sample at all, the squads we track haven't caught up with a defender who only just walked into the side, and that's a caveat worth keeping. A near-certain starter at a big defensive club is a good story on paper. A near-certain starter who joined three weeks ago and hasn't been tested there yet is still a projection, not a promise.

Below the household names, the differentials worth a look are mostly defenders: Collins at Brentford (4.2 points, 2.2% owned), Hall at Newcastle (4.18, 8%) and Murillo at Forest (4.08, just 1.6%) all rate well above their ownership. Hull City's Ajayi stands out twice, both a differential and a value pick, projected for 4.12 points at a rock-bottom £4.1m and only 7.4% owned, and one of just six players getting a price rise this week, alongside Brighton's De Cuyper, also on the risers, at 4.35 points and 14.1% owned. A price rise doesn't change the projection, but it's a sign other managers are starting to notice the same numbers the model already has.

None of this is a promise. Projected points and elite ownership are both evidence, not certainties. Saka's fitness history, Guéhi's short run in the side and Foden's history as a rotation option under Pep Guardiola are all real reasons a specific projection could miss. What the numbers do is point to where to look before the 5.30pm deadline: a Manchester United fixture against a leaky Everton defence, a Manchester City back line rebuilt on the fly, and a Forest midfielder still available in barely one in ten squads.
